  1. Without having to re-encode the file? I am asking b/c my DVD players (Liteon 5115 GHC+ and Philips DVD 642 ) can play the majority of mpeg/avi files I throw at them. Howver there a some mpeg/avi files they cannot play or skip over. Is there a program that can change the codec of the file w/o re-encoding? Thanks for your time

You can change the FourCC tag, but you cannot change the codec without re-encoding.

  3. So, if I change the fourcc tag to something my players will recognize, then it will play the file?
Can you give me a link to a program that will do this?

  4. FourCC Changer. But it is not for sure they will play the file.

  5. Before doing that, you should find out what FourCC the files have (e.g., use GSpot).

Changing the FourCC will only work if the encoding is the same. For example, the FourCC "MJPG" is often replaced with manufacturer's own codes (notably digital still cameras that can record short .AVIs), but the encoding is still MJPG.

    The above applies to AVIs.

MPEG files typically are not stored in AVIs. However, the extension used for MPEGs can vary - e.g., .MPG, .DAT, .M2V etc.

Can you be specific about the files that do not play?

  6. Hello, for example, one mpeg file that will not play on my Liteon and Philips is an Mpeg file with codec named "MPEG2"? But, why can't both players play a file with this codec, isn't mpeg 2 used by DVDs?

  7. Because there are resolution, bitrate and audio codec and samplerate, beside the video codec, what the players might not support.

My player won't play .mpg data files (they aren't listed when the contents of an inserted data CD/DVD is displayed), but if I rename them to .vob, they will show up and play nicely.
