I recorded a few episodes of 'Friends' TV serial using my Pinnacle PCTV pro tuner card in Mpeg2 format. I then cut out the ads in the serial and joined the clips to a single file. I then converted it to an avi file using MediaCoder app and used the xvid encoder.

The conversion finished well and first few times I played the video without any trouble. But now, in Windows Explorer, when I just click on the file to open it I get an error saying :

'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close '. And then the explorer reloads.

This happens everytime I click on the file. I captured some test clips and converted them to xvid using MediaCoder and even these new videos give me the same error.

    What could be the reason?

There are two possibilities I can think of. Does Explorer crash on other files using the same codec? If so, it's likely a corrupted codec.

If it only crashes on those particular videos, then the video file is likely corrupted. You can try turning off the 'Details' box in Explorer, and definitely don't use the 'Thumbnails' settings under 'Views' in your video folder. If Explorer can't open a video, it usually crashes.

I have had a few messed up videos that would do that. Try reprocessing (Re-encoding) one and see if that helps. If so, you have a problem somewhere in the handling of the video, probably at the editing or joining stage.

    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll to disable the preview. regsvr32 shmedia.dll to re-register if it doesn't help.
