    Hi
i have been downloading movies, converting them to DVD and then burning them to DVD+R's
without any problems for a while now.
Then about a fortnight ago while trying to convert a movie the pc froze. Everything wwas dead and I had to reset the pc, Since that point I have been unablt to convert any movies at all.

I have been using WINAVI but when that didn't work i have since tried AVS VIDEO CONVERTER, POWER , CUCUSOFT , EASY, and AMIC all with the same result the pc freezes.
I have tried various movies - still the same the pc freezes.
It isn't disk space as i have loads free.
I have tried uninstalling the codecs and then reinstalling them. I did get a message saying one of them was broken did I want the line in the registy deleting. This I did but then I have reinstalled the codecs without making any difference.

I can rip and burn audio - no problem
    play dvd's no problem
play movies that I have downloaded on my pc without any problem
but try converting them and the pc freezes every time.

    I haven't a clue whats wrong
just hope someone can help me please

    Useful for checking RAM: http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

A bad memory module will generally effect more then just conversion. You could also try running something like prime95 to see if it is stress related or specific to video.

pc is working fine except when i try to video converting.
I can't understand it because it was working fine up to a fortnight ago. I did have a problem with a trojan but I am sure i have finally got rid of that.
All scans for the past week have returned - clean
other than the odd tracking cookies.

  6. Did you do a Malware scan, Many of the P2P junk is infected. I repair computers for a living and it is just amazing how many that have Trojans, Keyloggers, Adware and Viruses are also running Limewire. Approx 75% of the infested computers if I had to put a number. The rest are where a website asked to install something and the user clicked OK or the maclicious website did a driveby install.

Think back to when this started happening....

Did you try and play a downloaded video/music clip that didn't play? If so run Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware, AVG Antispyware free.grisoft.com. Only get them from their home websites. Many of the cleaners and cleaner sites that turn up in a search engine will just install more malware. Antivirus still working? A lot of malware disables the AV

If the whole computer freezes during encoding (=converting), my first suspicion would be overheating CPU. Make sure your CPU cooler is running, and airflow not obstructed by dust and stuff. Install some CPU temp display.

thanks for reply-I had a keylogger did my credit card ( fraudulent entries for a flight & hotel ) on me. Hopefully got rid while scanning with Spyware Doctor Avast popped up and quarantined 3 items win32:Sdbot-4344 [Trj] . So after that i have installed Prevx1, Trojanhunter AVG Antispyware. I already had Ad Aware, Spybot, Spyware Doctor . All these plus Avast Anti Virus and Trend Micro HOUSECALL WINDOWS LIVE SCAN have all scanned clean this week apart from low risk tracking cookies.

my problems do sem to have started since I had the trojan.
but i am going to take the side off the case now ( re mats post - thanks mate ) and make sure all the fans are working. The case feels well cool though. I have enough fans fitted because I have fitted extra ones , but I will check they are all working.

  16. Sorry I missed your post. Those damn keyloggers can be a real pain getting things straightened out again.

Sometimes it is just easier to format and reload than try and get all the changes done by malware fixed.

BTW did you go into the tools menu of IE and then bottom of the list Internet Options? You need to check security settings and the advanced tab too. Much of the malware will change things there so that even if you clean it out it has lowered your security settings to make re-infection easier.

did you try a 'system restore' to last week, some time previous to the trojan, to when things were working, then

stay OFF line un plug the internet connection

and do a complete scan to make sure that you haven't re-installed the trojan

    or have it hiding.

then go online and immediately update all your protections
