  1. Ive tried Osiris to post something of mine.

it posted the individual files OK the rars and pars but not in a single folder.

also the numbering turned out to be "101 of 178" rather than 1 of 8.

    any seasoned Osiris-ers here?

    cheers and many thanks

    yes.

When you say "into a single folder" do you mean"
    1. the target ng, such as " alt.binaries.videos.slow death"

    or do you mean

    2. a whole folder that contained JUST your pars and rars
in a single folder within the target ng " alt.binaries.videos.slow death"?

The reason is is that #1 is normal, and with most people
many NG users STILL on dial up, the preferred method.

#2 is very tricky to do, and would require you to first
    (a) be the moderator of the said NG, or get the mod of NG
to enable you a folder, and then (b) you would have to target
that folder in your posting. It's not really preferred this way,
as again, NG users in the majority tend to be on DIALUP
and you might get flamed for doing so.

And for you to have 101 of 178 means that the upload (part)
size in Osisris is set smaller than your Pars and RARs, and it had to segment the files smaller.

    For instance:

Say you were uploading A Par set that contained one par,
and six rar files that you created .
    It might look like this:

    filename.par
    filename.rar
    filename.r00
    filename.r01
    .r02
    .r03
    etc.

but say each piece of the .rar is 14MBs, and Par is 32MBs.
If you have Osiris set to upload at less than 14MBs, say 7MBs,
then it will re-upload the pieces and then resegment them as:

    filename.par.00
    filename.par.01
    filename.par.02
    filename.par.03
    filename.par.04
    filename.par.05
    filename.par.06
    filename.par.07
    filename.par.08
    filename.par.09
    filename.par.010
    filename.rar.011
    filename.r00.012
    filename.r01.013
    .r02.014
    .r03.015

what will have to happen on the end user's end is that they have to get all smaller pieces, Rosetta (made by Thoth, not Apple)
will have to concat them back to their normnal pieces, and THEN,
normal .rar processing in MacPar Deluxe can occur.

this is why TORRENTING is so much easier!
because Torrenting, in its very nature, is built for two things:
    HIGH SPEED USERS
    and
    LARGE FILE DOWNLOADS.

Since the advent of torrent, I haven't really looked at NGs in a looooooonnnnggg time.....

  3. Well Terr, we All Know you are very advanced.

my initial posts made with SimplyRAR 109 and posted with Osiris seemed to work and now they do not.

it seems at some point the Pars were referenced to the original file and should have been ref'd to the RARs

but still don't know why any of them worked!

    of Course its Not p0rn!

anyway on some mac groups were are packages called Tiger Posting Suite v 6 with files like SimpleXSimon and cocoXpost, but they seem too complicated for me Now.

Id like to find a place where I can get refs to getting SimplyPAR to work correctly

is there something odd about its .plst? thought I saw something about that in the Ether.

anyway Id appreciated any of your help

    cheers

there is nothing high speed about torrents, it takes me several days to get a dvd5 from a torrent but the same dvd takes a matter of hours from usenet...

  5. Well,

I think Ive solved my problem in the sense my PARs were not from the RARs

any way, if you can work either SimplyPAR or Osiris better than I pls let me know!

Your picking movies with very poor Seed to Leech ratios then my amigo.

I usually go for Italian Horror, stuff not readily available from US Distributors
( much of it, for lack of a better term is "yellow". Wiki it if you don't know).

I just did a whole 1.3GB rip of dvd to avi of TORSO in under 2 hours,
    (36S/48L)
and a complete 4.37Gb iso of three giallo movies on one disc in 4 hours.
    (26S/56L)

I do keep my Azareus "tweeked" to have a higher dl than UL ratio, and allow for
higher amount of connections over running more than two torrents at a time, BUT
Seed to Leech ratio is VERY important...perhaps you aren't connecting to enough trackers,
or the tracker you are picking aren't scraping stats correctly, or the movies your picking
( and this has been happening a lot lately) are being seeded by people in Euro
countries that have caps on their Internet. On this last point, the only
thing you can do is wait a couple of days until the ratio changes and more seeders
jump on board. You don't always have to jump on a torrent the FIRST day.....

    8)

but NGs, unless your on a dedicated NG Paid service like giganews, tigernews, or
or my old home, usenetserver, your rentention is crap on the free services,
most ISPs don't maintain ( backup, virus protect) their NG servers ( like Cox),
and the ratio of b!tch!n lame o 56K users versus HS users as uploaders
    is ridiculous.

I look at like this: I love NG for small things ( .jpgs), but with a torrent,
you can upload an ISO image WHOLE and be done. no rars, no pars,
no lost or corrupt segments, and no whining b!tch!n 56k using leechers
complaining because you didn't optimize the file JUST FOR THEM,
because their too cheap to pay more than Netzero's $9.99 price,
but expect the world on that shoestring.

Do I miss NG's? Sure like a 76 Buick Riveria.
But would I trade in my 06 buick (torrents) for it.....nope.

  7. THaks Terr

Id like to hear more on Azerius

Id certainly like to be informed on such things. I have Verizon Fios and it seems fine to me. they finally added a key newgroup that had some "rogue" aspects to it that kept it out, maybe V changed its policy or the newgroup got a more conventional accreditation, beats me

But Im willing to try torrents.

    your suggestions?

new threads? (BTW just so you know How Ignorant I Am, will a torrents DLoader work with Verizons newserver or do they require extra subs.?

anyway, don't let the medium informed get UnderTheSkin

your help is Always appreciated by Most Of Us Here.

BitTorrent is a separate and very different distribution method compared to Usenet newsgroups. See it as two separate networks; they may contain the same files, but there is no reason why the same files should be present on both networks.
Also, special interest torrent trackers are quite hard to find, unlike special interest newsgroups.
No extra subscription is needed (well, maybe more bandwidth ) with your ISP, but some torrent trackers may want you to register with them.
