  1. we have this dvd, and we only want a clip to show from it. Its about 5 minutes long, We would like it to be under 100 MB, and would like the video to be very high video quality, with small file size. Whats the Best format for that? Should it be mp4? mpeg 4? mpg? divx?or xvid? and which codec should i use to encode it? We just care about the high video quality at low file size, The sound can just be normal, not high, or great, Please tell us which porgram or best way to convert this vob clip, to high quality video, so we can upload to sites like youtube

Cause most videos uploaded to flash sites like youtube, loose quality tremendouly and bad viewing, would like my videos to be this clear,

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWYGh-l1FEI

That video is 7 minutes long, and under 100 MB, good clear quality, would like my clips to be that good, when ripping from my dvd

I would use VirtualDub Mod and start with the Xvid codec. VDM can open VOBs and encode to Xvid or other AVI type formats, including H264. You can also convert the audio to MP3 there to save some space. I would add the Lame MP3 encoder for a better selection of audio settings. All programs are freeware.

The size of the encoded video depends on it's length and your encoder settings. Since you are asking about a short clip, you can try a few different settings or just set the output to 100MB. There is a bitrate calculator built into the encoder. Two pass VBR would be a good choice for high quality and predictable filesize.

  3. i updated my thread, after u posted, Also would like to know what does bitrate KBPS doo?
Like it says 1800, would it make the video higher quality if i make the bitrate 100? what if i make the bitrate 3000? would it make it better or badder?

    heres what i updated

Yes, but that video is also decribed as from a high definition source to start with. That helps when you re-encode to a more compressed format. Still, you should end up with good quality if you start with it. It also depends on what YouTube does to it after it's uploaded to them.

  5. thanks for the info, but how bout my question with the bitrate thing? does it make the video higher quality with high bitrate or lower bitrate settings?

Sorry, I missed that line. Higher bitrate=Higher quality=larger size. The inverse is also true. That's one reason to use a bitrate calculator to maximize the bitrate you can use for your chosen filesize. You should also lower the audio settings (quality) as much as possible to maximize space for your video.

Fast motion, dark scenes, camera shake, uses a lot of bitrate to keep the quality. Pay attention if you are using DV footage, as that can be hard to convert and keep quality and a small filesize.

I'm sure there are other tricks, like lowering the frame rate and resolution, that may shave some more size off a encoded video.
