Hello all. I'm one of numerous people trying to capture some old VHS stuff. I'm curious to know if I can capture this stuff using just my current hardware. I don't have any specific video capture cards, but I'm curious to konw if standard graphics cards can handle this stuff now a days. I have two computers, one with an nVidia Go7400 (Laptop card), the other with an ATI/AMD x600. I also have an ATI/AMD x1300 Pro, collecting dust in my computer parts bin. Can any of those cards actually handle video capture? I've looked through Google enough times, and I can't find anything conclusive. What would be neccesary to make any of those cards video capture capable? Any help is much appreciated.

If none of those graphics cards can do video capture, what would I need? I need something with S-Video, due to complications with some of my VCR hardware.

There's a 99.9% chance they do not. Capture the video card is add on feature, they are usully labled VIVO for the Nvidia's and AIW for the ATI's. Addtionally you would have extra cords and software, specifically a dongle that plugs into the card for S-video, composite input. Note that some caqrds have s-video out but that is only output. As far as software it would have come with PVR software for viewing whatever you are inputting.

As far as what you need there is hundreds of choices, describe better what you want to do, budget, time you want to spend etc.

I'm trying to take a bunch of old VHS tapes from the 90's and convert them into DVD's, with as little degridation in quality as possible. I already have a VHS player, with S-Video output. It's the only working output, due to abuse by kids, but it'd suffice to say I'd prefer not to buy a new one, because thier outdated. Money on the newer hardware isn't an issue, but It'd be prefered if whatever I got could reproduce at least TV quality video's, for DVR purposes later on.

Both external USB/Firewire/whatever and internal PCI/e solutions are welcome. Cheap is always prefered, but I need decent quality.

Once again, thanks for any help.

S-Video is video only you still need the composite red and white audio jacks working.

Their is two distinct routes for capture MPEG or AVI, MPEG is faster and suitable for minor editing. AVI is better for extensive editing, filtering etc. Look int the capture forum there are alot of threads discussng the diferences.

As far as hardware for MPEG:

The Hauppage series of cards or a DVD recorder

    AVI:

I usually recmmend a DV device because it's the most practical and then easiest. Canopus or it's cheapes counterpart Adtech pyro. You can also do this with a mini-dv camcorder that has passthough.

The recorder or the camcorder would be my choice because you still have a device usable in another capacity.
