    Hi,

Need some advice if anyone can help?

I am filming videos with NTSC cameras, and need to edit into PAL format via digital editing board and dvd recorder (Im currently making the videos with my laptop but it takes too long)

I am planning to do the following....can anyone give advice if this will work or not?

    Hook my camera into.....
NTSC to PAL convertor (eg Atlona or SECAM), feeding into............
Video digital mixer (eg Sima SFX-9 or SFX-M or Videonics mixer model #MX-1)..........then
    into a DVD recorder.

    Thanks
    Adam

Since most if not all Euro PAL dvd players also play NTSC discs, why not just author a NTSC DVD and send that out? The general rule is:
PAL DVD Players-Can playback NTSC discs
NTSC DVD Players-Cannot playback PAL discs (without special unlock codes)
So, the european owners can playback US discs, but US owners cannot playback european discs.

    Hope this helps.
NTSC->PAL and PAL->NTSC conversions are not so easy to get right.

  3. In principle, it should work.

I haven't heard of the Atlona, so I did a quick Google. The units I saw seem very inexpensive which makes me wonder if they do full conversion - i.e., do they convert 59.94 fields per second (NTSC) to 50? Or do they just convert the way the colour information is encoding and resize the frame?

Also, if the mixer supports NTSC and PAL, I'd put that between the cam and the converter....

Finally, many DVD players will play NTSC and PAL quite happily. i.e., you could record directly from NTSC (which will look much better than an NTSC-PAL conversion). It depends on whoever is going to end up with the DVDs and the player(s) they have...

Thanks for your help I appreciate it.

Took a look at the secam and it states 'Field conversion
    60 > 50 : 50 > 60 fields'

If I was going to make an NTSC disc, Im assuming I would have to buy a DVD recorder from the states..(then no need for the convertor?)....then I could make a NTSC dvd and people with a PAL recoder could view it. Thats an idea. you both agree with this?

    thanks again

I'm not sure that's true. Usually, it's the region code that needs hacking. Region 0 PAL DVDs should play on NTSC DVD players (mine do).
