    It depends what video codec and audio codec the mp4 contains. Your dvd player doesn't support everything like h264, high resolution video,etc...for such use latest alltoavi beta(or any other mencoder gui...). If it contain divx or xvid you can use mp4cam2avi, mplayer,virtualdubmod to change to an avi without reencoding.

    That's actually extremely easy. Many programs support .MP4 now. If you want to convert to Divx AVI for standalone players, use Iriverter (Follow instructions to make a 640x480 or bigger video).

    it wont open in virtualdubmod

    Again, try Mp4Cam2AVI.
    If your mp4 file is in Nero Digital format, it would take 10 minutes to make it compatible with your stand alone DVD player. No video recompression.

    Not to panic, try out Iriverter. That converter converts with a lot of ease mp4 files to AVI, encoded with Divx.
