I have a friend who was thinking of buying a portable dvd player (for his kids on long car journeys!)

I haven't got any info yet as to the make model but he mentioned that it said it could play mp4 video files.

Does this mean it can definitely play Divx and Xvid? Or is it a case of maybe and he should research further, as he has a lot of xvid and divx files.

Or is mp4 support something completely different?

I do realise that there are some divx and xvid files that are encoded in such a way that gives playing problems on certain hardware so that even if something is certified to play them you can still have problems. I'll look in to that but just wanted to know if mp4 support is the same as divx and xvid support?

    Thanks guys

mp4 is a container for video and audio and it can contain several different formats and no dvd player supports everything that the mp4 container supports. I would research a bit further and it would help a lot if you had the name of the dvd player.

Thanks for that, he was assuming mp4 was the same as mpeg4 and therefore also divx and xvid - i told him to be careful and double check!
