  1. When I double click on a folder on my destop it takes a second or three to open. Then the next folder I click opens instantly. This seems to be true more or less for me on every computer I have owned. Is this something I am doing or is it normal? I do have a lot of icons and folders on my desktop, could that be it?

This is just a minor annoyance that has always bugged me. I mean computer do many thousands of computations a second right? What in the world is it doing that takes so long on the first folder but not after that?

Most likley is when you open the first folde Windows (being slightly stupid) caches all the other folders on your desktop (or possibly a good portion of the disk).

Hence after the first disk access everything comes from memory very quickley.

Alternatively Advanced Power Management (APT) has powered the disk off (or slowed it down on some models) and you have to wait for the disk to spin back up.

Whatever it is I suspect you are just ging to have to live with it

  3. Do you have any shortcuts to items on other drives/folders?

Windows has to refresh the icons in the desktop folder - this involves regenerating icons. If you have a shortcut to a removable object and it isn't available, there will be a delay.

check if your folders are set to show thumbnails; they are each effectively a unique icon & each can take time to create from a multimeg photo
