I have been reading the guides. How am i going to know if the conversion was successful? I currently own a dvd player that plays both regions 1 and 2.

Regions have nothing to do with NTSC and PAL.
Region 1 is usually NTSC and Region 2 is usually PAL.....but I can easily make a Region 2 - NTSC disc...the disc would still be NTSC.

NTSC / PAL are different TV systems. Region coding, is an artificial way of making DVDs unplayable in other regions than it was made for. That some regions codes apply to areas with a certain TV system is just - coincidence.
Most PAL players play NTSC disks without any converting. TV system conversion is tricky, and if avoidable, should be avoided.
