USB hub, slow......

I bought a USB Hub. I made sure it supported USB2 so that it would work FAST. I put my printer, card/reader write and my external HD on it. When I turn any of them on I get a message that says I could be using a port that supports USB2. It lists 10 unused porst. I don't know what 10 ports they are talking about. Could someone help me out please? If I need to post screen caps I will. I'm out the door right now, but will post more info if needed later.

There is difference between USB2 - Full Speed and Hi Speed.

Only USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices can claim to operate at the (theoretical, since few can actually reach the maximum) rate of "up to 480 Mbit/s."

Devices listed as simply USB 2.0 or USB 2.0 Full Speed are really using USB 1.1 standard. USB 1.1 has transfer rate of 12 Mbit/s (1.5 MB/s).

There may be unused motherboard USB 2.0 ports. Go to 'Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus controllers>Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller>Root Hub>Power and you should see how many you have. If you have a second Root Hub, it probably has the same amount.

You may need a cable from your motherboard to a PCI slot adapter.



Or optionally, just install a 2.0 USB PCI adapter card.

No, a Hi-Speed device (such as an external USB2 hard disk) plugged into a USB2 port will be fast, provided your hardware is working properly.
Anyway, that has nothing to do with your problem, which seems to be your operating system is seeing 10 unused USB2 ports.
Your motherboard has 4 onboard USB2 ports, and 2 internal USB2 port headers. I'm guessing that your new hub is 4 ports, which adds up to a total of 10. Is your new hub powered? What happens if you disconnect the hub, and plug one of your devices directly into the motherboard USB port?

My HUB has 7 ports. You are actually supposed to be able to connect 2 PCs to the HUB in order to share whatever devices are connected to it. This is the hub

And after reading the page, I noticed it says 1.1...but below that it says

FULL-SPEED 12Mbps, Slow Speed 1.5Mbps.

EDIT - OK...so maybe begining to understand. 12Mbps is slow...??
