  1. Greetings - I need to prepare a movie clip and need some advice on the best way to go about doing the DVD ripping part of it. Here is what I need to do overall...

    * I need to extract (rip) a single chapter (or user defined segment) from a DVD movie disk and save it as a video file. I need to keep it very high quality.

    * Then I will add this file to a video/audio track in Adobe Premiere Pro 2 so that I can edit both the video and the audio portions.

    * Then I will "export" this edited video as a DV file, so it can be presented (via MediaShout) on a pair of 8' screens.

The problem is the DVD ripping part. I have tried DVDFab, Xilisoft DVD ripper, etc but end up with an output file that is poor quality compared to the DVD itself. I have tried a slew of codecs too so I know I am missing something. What software and/or codec do I need to rip just the chapter, and save it as a file for importing into Premiere Pro while maintaining near DVD quality?

Any advice/suggestions would be VERY appreciated!

    Thanks, Mark

You can use DVD Decrypter to do what you are asking. Make sure you are in IFO mode and on the right window just check which chapter you want. Also be sure to pick the right stream to rip from in the window above it. It will output in mpeg-2. Only problem is it hasn't been updated in a long time but it still works great.

If you are just ripping (Transferring the contents of the DVD to the hard drive), you should get exactly the same quality as the DVD files. If you extract the MPEG-2 and audio files from the VOBs, you should still get the same quality. Somewhere in there you are re-encoding or transcoding if the quality changes.

Even DVD Shrink can rip a single chapter with identical quality to the original disc.

  7. Moderator - No problem on the posting; Thanks for everyone's input.

So I tried both DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and they both seem to only output files meant for DVD - i.e. VOB files. But Premiere Pro does not accept VOB files as input video files so they need to be converted to another format.

What tool and format would you suggest to convert VOB files again keeping the best quality image that I can? There are a lot of them to choose from.

    Thanks, Mark

    Did you try DVDx?
It exports to a compliant MPEG file.

  9. DVD2AVI or Virtualdub-mpeg2, trim and convert to AVI un-compressed. If file exceed the 2GB limit, you'll have to frameserve into Premiere. Lookup the guides.
