Greetings - I am looking for high quality DVD ripping software (PC) that will allow me to rip just a single chapter or user-defined segment of a movie DVD to an output file on my hard disk. My desired output format is .AVI using codecs like xivd, divx, h264 etc.
I say "high quality" because that's the issue that I am running into. For example I tried DVDFab just this morning. It seems to come highly recommended. Love the interface BTW. I ripped a 5 minute chapter using xivd-audiocopy, xivd-mp3, h264, etc. The output quality is ok, but not near as nice as the DVD.
Is this as good as it gets with DVD ripping software, or are there better tools out there? OR is it the video codecs that make the difference in quality? I am using K-Lite-Full pack currently. I would like to spend no more than about $75 if I can help it, but I need much higher quality than what i am seeing right now so if I have to spend more, then I'll consider it.
Tools I have tried:
DVDFab - The best one I have seen so far, but are there better one's?
Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum - Slower/lower quality than DVDFab. No worth the money IMO.
AutoGK - Haven't actually used it, but the interface looks really tough to use (like to select just a single chapter). Seems to be highly recommended also.
Any advice/help would be most appreciated!
Thanks, Mark

You'll only keep the best quality if you don't convert DVD material to a format designed for transmitting video via low bandwidth channels (like divx).
If you have smth like DVDRegionFree installed (in case the DVD is a commercial one), any version of TDA will cut videos by chapter. It imports chapter information and you can either use original chapter points or your own edits on time-line for importing a desired part of DVD. In the end you get a DVD compilation of only useful material.

Alex_ander,
Thank you for that information. I downloaded TDA and installed it. I selected a chapter off of the DVD as the "Source". Checked it out in "Simulation" - it looks perfect. Then I clicked on "Output". There are no options to save that chapter as a video file. Only option is to save it to the hard drive under a VIDEO_TS directory structure (i.e. like a DVD).
I need to be able to save it as a file so that I can then open it in Adobe Premiere Pro and do some editing to it, then export it as a DV video. Can I do this with TDA, or is there a better approach?
Thanks a lot for your input and time!
Mark
