Are the videos valid (in other words, do they play properly in all players)?

I don't know about Goldwave, as I don't use it, but for AVIs, you can also try VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod, AVI2WAV, and AVIDemux (I think).

@ loa909: Open your troublesome AVI file with GSpot and post a screenshot - it'll tell us (and you) what the audio format is.

  6. Have a read of http://www.goldwave.com/faq.php#mpeg - it states that "[t]o save and create MP3 files the LAME MP3 Encoder must be installed."

Try a different app to extract like vdubmod in full processing/save wav. Or besweet can do it directly from teh .avi if you have the VOBinput.dll in your directory. Then open up the wav in goldwave.

I believe - certainly from my experience - that VirtualDub (and VDMod) svae out the original audio, in the original format (i.e. VBR MP3 in this case) and just sticks a WAV extension on the end. No real use. I only found this out recently...

This happens to you when full processing? In vdubmod you right-click on the audio and switch to full processing, in order to extract to pcm wav. Direct stream will just rename to .wav. That being said I don't use vdubmod to extract to .wav anymore as besweet is so reliable and has never failed me when i do this. Plus it has a faster batch procedure than vdubmod, in case I need to do many at one time.

I just tried extracting audio using vdubmod on 3 avi files with vbr audio. It worked on 2 and it couldn't with the other, saying I don't have an audio decompressor. Which don't make sense to me cuz they all have the same spec audio and the others extracted just fine.

Only in direct stream copy mode, not in full processing mode. Full processing mode will save an uncompressed wave file.

As to the OP's problem. You might want to reset GSpot to it's default settings and try again to see what is opening the MP3 file. Check the audio status to make sure a codec is installed and click the 1 box unde audio to render the audio file.

Lame is an encoder, not a decoder. Fraunhofer should be decoding the file but if you have ffdshow installed, it may be playing your MP3 files.

I have Goldwave 4.26 on my PC and I have no problem opening AVI files with MP3 audio or MP3 music files for that matter.

Maybe you could reset your options in GSpot to default and repost a screenshot so we can see the information that we are not able to see like rendering and codec status.

You might search your computer to make sure you have L3CODECA.ACM

Here is a link to the Goldwave forum...

    http://www.goldwave.ca/forums/viewforum.php?f=2&topicdays=0&start=50

and here is a link to the Fraunhofer MP3 decoder...

    http://www.free-codecs.com/MPEG_Layer_3_Codec_download.htm

I notice the file has VBR MP3 but it shouldn't have problems opening VBR since it Goldwave is used to fix VBR audio.
