It seems that if my back up disc has any problems, its always near the end of the movie...where I'll get the artifacting, skipping, studdering where the disc will either get through it and continue or it will just freeze up.

Is this because of bad media or could it be that I'm burning too fast? It wouldn't have anything to do with the ripping/transcoding right?

Only if those problems exist throughout the video.

Burns tend to fail at the end, make sure your software and firmware is up to date. Use good media, slower burn rate may help and lastly don't try to fill the whole disc. I try and keep mine under 4 GB's.

    ohhhh...and howdy neighbor.

I don't think it's really necessary to stay under 4 GBs. I use high quality media (either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim) and I don't have these types of issues on burns greater than 4 GBs.

I agree jman98 but I'm one of those rather be safe than sorry kind of people. I don't make backups or rips so the material I'm working with is original, a failed disc 5 years from now isn't a just a bummer.

    howdy neighbor..lol.

hmm...never really thought about firmware...have to look at that. I never looked for updates of my DVD burner in my 2 year old Dell XPS.

As for keeping under 4GB...yeah, i did that with a bunch of media I knew had a crappy outer edge...if I kept it at 3.8GB or so..it was fine...I'm guessing this batch of HP media might stink. Just hard to find "good" media.

Been using Nero 6.5 to burn aand now just tried out AnyDVD/CloneDVD for the last movie...PULSE.
