I have an mpeg2 that was created when it was imported to Power Director from Media Center Recorded TV. The file is now an mpeg2....I believe. The problem is that the file is 4.7 gig and Power Director won't allow it to be burned to DVD unless I degrade the quality of the original file to 2.84 gig. I can't delete any information in this file, and I want to create a DVD that retains, or utilizes, the majority of the 4.7 gig I have available on my single layer burner DVD. What should I use to "transcode??" this file to about 4.3 gig, so I can burn it to DVD and retain most of my original data? Thanks, Wade

Well, you can use Rejig , which will reduce the size, at the expense of video quality loss. But I'm wondering why your app wants your file reduced to 2.8GB ? Doesn't make sense.

Just to help us out, drag your file into GSPOT and post a screen capture.

You can also split your file into 2 pieces and create 2 DVDs, I suppose, but once again, the 2.8GB thing is bizarre. What specifically does the app say ?

Finally, if you just want to do this as simply as humanly possible, you can re-encode with ConvertXtoDVD and have a folder ready to burn with your favorite DVD burner. Not free ($30), but once you use it, you'll be happy to have plunked down the dough.

I see three methods of requant/transcode the mpeg to fit on a single layer DVDR:
    - Use Rejig as described
    - Author the too-big demuxed mpeg with GfD using requant option
    - Author the mpeg with GfD and then do a transcode with DVDShrink

I prefer the last modus operandi but just because I merely suppose that DVDShrink analyzes the videostream more thorough than other requant methods. I would be glad if any of the geeks here could clarify what actually is the best method - and why they think so.

Ok, I've taken a screenshot of the file currently in question. (see attached) DVDShrink does not recognize it. Is there anything strange about this file? Wade

You might want to read this about posting screenshots: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=271697

But as far as I can tell, that's a DVD compliant MPEG-2 file at 4.97GB. A DVD-5 holds about 4.37GB. If you allow about 100 - 200MB for authoring, you need to reduce your file down to about ~4.2GB before authoring. Rejig would be the easiest. Authoring it first, then transcoding with Shrink would be the long way around and would likely give lower quality than Rejig.

    A guide for Rejig: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=272427

The other alternative is to re-encode the whole video, which will give you the best quality.

You could also change the MP2 audio to AC3, which would be more compliant with the DVD format and save you a little more room for the video. Then you wouldn't have to reduce the size as much. You might try ffmpeggui for that.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks for info. on posting a sreen shot. I'm still having problems getting the size of this file changed to utilize the capacity of my DVD. DVDShrink does not see the edited MPEG2 file created after editing in Power Director. Power Director does not see (can't import them) the files I created using ReJig. I must really be missing something obvious. I really appreciate the patience and time of the technologically advanced members of this site. Thanks again, Wade

Not a problem. Always glad to see new members. DVD Shrink will only accept a authored DVD file, at least the VIDEO_TS folder. That's why Rejig was suggested. It works with just the MPEG file.

I haven't used Rejig that much and never used Power Director, so not much help there. Your video seems to be DVD compliant, so any authoring program should be able to accept it.

As mentioned earlier, ConvertXToDVD is a easy way to convert a MPEG to a DVD. It does the authoring.

If you want more control over the finished DVD, then you might want to look into some authoring programs.

You should to take a look at the DVD specification and format. You can see that in 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left on this page.
