I've got MPG files from a capture card. GSpot says they are MPEG-2 1 video 6336 kb/s VBR 1 audio 48000 Hz 224 kb/s stereo, which I hope is fully DVD-compatible.
I want to just convert to IFO/VOB with no titles, chapters, editing or anything like that, with freeware. (I'll excise commercials with DVDShrink. I much prefer DVDs that simply play when young grandchildren put them in the player.)
Recommendations?

Begging to differ, but I've already got muxman and it doesn't accept .mpg files. (Yes, I tried renaming one to .m2v) I've already checked the maze of programs in the list mentioned. And, I've gone through a dozen programs that didn't work before finding the combo that allowed the creation of a chapter separator.
That's why I'm asking for recommendations, like from someone who has actually used their recommended tool for this. -

Eh? Biting the hand that feeds you? Just demux your MPG using DGIndex (File->Save Project And Demux Video) and then load the resulting M2V and AC3 into Muxman. If you want payware, I believe that TDA can author MPG files directly. Most authoring apps, though, prefer elementary streams.
Edit: steveryan beat me with a different and equally valid solution. -
There is no freeware which accepts MPG files from a capture card 'directly' without demux. dvdauthor accepts MPG files, but only if these contain already empty navigation packs. There are a number of commercial tools which accept any MPG files, but I presume these demux and remux the MPG files too (only not visible for the user).
The closest you can get is using VideoReDo to cut and output as vob (then empty navigation packs are created). For dvdauthorgui you can use the vob files directly, for dvdstyler I don't know, for GfD these must be renamed to mpg (but really just renamed).
With freeware only, no way without demux.
But if you excise commercials with DVDShrink, I think the total time for demux + cut + author will be quite the same as 'preauthoring' MPGs with commercials and excise the commercials with DVDShrink (which is not very precise BTW...).GUI for dvdauthor:

you can use windows 'movie maker' to edit your captures to remove the commercails and create (1) mpeg file
movie maker came with your PC
you can use avidemux2 to extract the audio stream from the completed mpeg to AC3
the problem becomes now how to get an m2v elemetry stream from the mpeg
OR
you could also download the 30 day trial of ulead movie factory 5
this program will accept your captured mpegs let you edit the commercials and then output to DVD format
the trial is free, if you want to keep using it after the 30 days you you can order the CD from the website
i use movie factory for editing and authoring most of my mpeg captures
I use the excellent free ware programs for my avi conversions -
"Biting the hand that feeds you?"
Yes, if the hand is empty. Just what any squirrel would do...
DGIndex produces MPA audio not AC3. Muxman accepts the MPA, but not the DGIndex m2v, (although GSpot seems to say it's OK).
Rejig works as described, and DVDShrink accepts the results.
Thanks, steveryan -
Thanks, i'm glad it worked for you. You were a bit rude with manono though John, he knows his stuff
He's a liar and a murderer, and I say that with all due respect. -
Yuck. Uncool, John999. Uncool. Make sure you never ask me for help.

DGIndex produces MPA audio not AC3.
If MPA audio was on the DVD, that's what you get. I said AC3 only because that's what's usually on a DVD. Could also be MPA, WAV, or DTS as well. I don't capture, so I don't know what all they might use.
Muxman accepts the MPA, but not the DGIndex m2v...
You must have Forced Film'd it. Glad you got it sorted out. -
My apologies to manono and anyone else who thought my snap was aimed at him. It wasn't - it was a reaction to two of the prior posters.
I've enough experience with muxman that I would never recommend it to anyone without a caveat that it is very picky about its input files and tells you zip as to why. It's true that when it accepts files it treats them right.
And to 'recommend' that one look at the heap of programs in that list, many overpriced and many of shaky capabilities or worse, was I submit a pretty low jab.
Anyway, peace agreed, and thanks again for the advice that solved this problem.
