  1. I am still learning Sony Vegas 7. Is there a easy way to mask the first few bottom lines of my DV-AVI VHS captures? With CCE and TMPGENC encoders, they have a masking option that masks while encoding to MPEG2. Sony Vegas has a compositing/mask effect. Do I need to manually create the mask?

If you want TV playback, you don't have to mask anything, as it will be hidden by TV overscan. But an old dog like you knew that already, didn't you?

You can either use the biscuit cutter to add a frame, or even easier, just drop a black card (Media Generator -> Solid Colour) onto the top timeline, then use Event Pan & Crop to move it down to where you need it.

  4. okay thanks guys. I used the media generator and crop pan. It works. Only problem is if you want to mask each side of the frame, you have to lay down four tracks, one for each side.

If you want to mask all four sides, put down one track of black, then apply the cookie cutter to show the video through the middle. adjust the size until you have small borders masking just the noise.
