  1. My sister bought a Dell PC 18 months ago. It has both DVD-ROM and DVD-Writer and the DVD-ROM is now defective. I am thinking to replace it with either a LG GSA-H22N or GSA-H50N.

    I know for a fact that this PC has a SATA hard disk. Is it possible that it has SATA DVD drives as well? Not sure if there were any SATA DVD drives available 18 months ago.

    I need to confirm this because we do not live in the same town.

    If its 18 months old - highly unlikely. Like most PC makers Dell is cost-sensitive, the price delta between IDE and SATA optical drives was way too wide at that point.

    I don't think so. Can someone confirm this?

    I have a Plextor 712 that is SATA, and it's at least that old - it's been in this machine that long.

    Yes hopefully, as luckilly having one of the first completely IDE free mobos (except a floppy D socket), SATA optical drives are an interest of mine (since ide/sata conversion cards can't hope to have the efficiency of a direct link).

    This article linked below suggests the sata plextor was released at the start of 2005 but it was the ONLY ONE until spring 2006;

    However, significantly, i've not seen Plextor as a manufacturer recorded in the Dell DVD writer manual archives .

    BUT if 'classfour' has a Dell which came with a plextor my assumptions are clearly in error and it could be either type, though it would be an additional cost at worst there are endless numbers of these Sata to Ide cards on UK ebay though NB compatibility can't be guaranteed;

  7. Yes, the interface is IDE. I replaced the DVD-ROM with a LG-H50N. Works great.

    Thanks.
