  1. When you use a VHS tape as source you sometimes get that white flickering line at the bottom of the screen. I was wondering if there's a program that can correct this? Maybe by simply removing the bottom few pixels of the AVI? (Or some more ingenious approach)

It's probably VHS 'head switching' noise. If it doesn't show up on the TV, I would just ignore it. If you blank it out, you will need to re-encode.

    And welcome to our forums.

I would have removed it just before encoding. Like someone said already, if it is already on the DVD then you would have to do it all again.

I tried some of those flicker filters for virtualdub last night, and all they did was make things worse. I reduced filter by increasing a temporal noise filter. It normalized the flicker, albeit at a cost of making the image look a bit more "plastic". But plastic was less obnoxious than high-speed flicker.

Sounds like a Macrovision protected commercial VHS tape that they are
trying to prevent from being copied.

I have an in line unit called a Macro Terminator II to remove Macrovision on VHS tapes when backing up my originals. It is the only unit that I found actually works. Good luck in finding one though. They have not been manufactured for years. Used to be made by a company from Atlanta. Maybe ebay.
I also use a Hotronic AP41 TBC to clean up any signal I'm working with.
