How can I convert an AVI video file to DV please?

A friend has a video camera which he says produces AVI files on MiniDV tape. My Sony DCR HC95 produces DV files on MiniDV tape. After making a movie with both cameras I need to edit his shots in Apple's Final Cut Express. I expect that he can provide me with a DVD with his AVI footage on it. For that reason I need to convert his AVI to DV, (or to Quicktime).

How can I do that please? Would ffmpegX do it?

    Thanks

Both are DV-AVI files. AVI is just a container file that can have many types of video in it, in the case of mini-dv cams its DV .

So does that mean I would be able to load his DVD-based AVIs straight into FCE?

DV-AVI is DV-AVI, the media it's on is irrelvant. Be aware DV-AVI is about 14 gigs per hour so you're looking at a little less than 18 minutes per DVD.

SteveKir, also, if you have Mac specific questions, you will likely get more answers in our Mac forum. We also have two ffmpegx forums. Most video formats are universal between Intel PCs and Macs, so you should have little problem with importing them.

    And welcome to our forums.

  7. If FCP Express cannot understanding DV-AVIs, you will need to convert the DV-AVI to some other format, whilst maintaining the DV format.

The two obvious options are either Quicktime .MOV or raw .DV.

Quicktime Pro will convert DV-based AVIs to either .MOV or .DV. But you have to pay for it

Perhaps someone with FCP Express can confirm whether the software can import DV-AVIs....

Jonny: I am beginning to think that, as my friend's camcorder is definitely a digital one, and as he said (he is away at the moment) that it produced AVIs, the files are likely to be DV-AVIs, and I think FCE can read those.
