Well, what I can tell you is the Pioneer 111 is pretty much perfect in all regards, both reading and writing, as well as build quality and media burn quality and media support.

    That is important.

All models can vary a bit. While Pioneer is almost one of the best 3 drives, the 111 is probably their best drive to date. I need to buy another one.

The 112 is proving to be a very awesome drive for me. I don't have the 111 to compare it to, but it smokes my 108 in all respects.

Better hurry because the 111 will be obsolete soon. Newegg is out of stock at the moment. The local Best Buy here has the retail 710 (111d) on clearance for $49.99. I believe Fry's also has the Pioneer retail 710 for $29.99 after $15.00 mail in rebate.

Going off topic a bit Newegg does have the SATA PIONEER 212 available as well.

I do like the 112 drive as it burns 12x-16x very well with VERBATIM & TY media.

  6. I have the Pioneer 710 (111d) and it's fabulous both read and write. I would expect the 112 to be good as well but you never know, I'd go with the proven 111. As someone mentioned, checked the CD Freaks Pioneer forum, there's probably more user reports and testing been done on the 112 there.

The BEST BUY website now lists a Pioneer DVR-1810B which I am assuming is the retail version of the OEM DVR 112 ... is that correct?

Yes, that's the retail version of the 112. Both the 111 & 112 burn well with the dvd media that I use which is VERBATIM & TY. The latest batch of DVD+R MCC004 hasn't been as good as the DVD-R MCC 3RG20. The 112D I have it crossflashed to the 112L so it can enable bitsetting to dvdrom for single layer DVD+R media. You'll need to use TDB 112L hack firmware first then use the patched 112L Buffalo 8.06 firmware & then the Buffalo original 8.09 firmware. You can download the Buffalo firmwares from here:

The instructions on how to flash are included in the zip file.

I own the 111 in black and am looking for another but can't find black so I am considering the 112. Would like opinions on 111 vs. 112. Really like my 111 but can't find it in black, should I buy a beige 111 or is the 112 (which is available in black) just as good as the 111? Thank you for your comments.
    Thank You,

.... it was mentioned a few posts back - the ASUS DRW-1608P3S BK is available at Newegg for $30.99 + 5.64 shipping. It is a rebadged Pioneer 111 not the 111D. Of course it can be cross-flashed just like the 111D.

You could spray paint the beige 111 drive to black. The 112 is just as good as the 111. I own both drives.
