K-lite: Known to cause damage to some systems, may install corrupted or obsolete codecs, may replace working codecs with broken ones. May damage existing codecs. It's sort of a 'shotgun' approach to codec installing, just throws them in there and sometimes they work, sometimes not. Difficult to remove without causing further damage. In some cases, may require a reinstall of the OS to clean up the mess. Do a forum search for 'K-lite' and you will probably decide never to let it near your system.
FFdshow: Has few problems. Mostly used for MPEG-4 compatibility. Safe in most any system.
But I don't really recommend any codec packs.
Generally the best approach to codec installation is to use a program like Gspot to find out which codec you need and only install that one. Yes, you can have too many codecs, especially if you have more than one of each. If you come upon a odd format, try VLC Media Player first before you install a codec you may only use once.
