I have this burner installed in an external USB 2 case (on a laptop). NEC says not to upgrade the firmware if it is installed as an external USB/firewire drive, but the drive will not support DVD-R DL without the firmware upgrade and I need to be able to use DVD-R DL media. Anyone encountered this or tried it and have suggestions?

I also have a Phillips OEM burner in a Dell desktop with the same problem.

Yeah, put it in the desktop do the firmware update then put it back in the external box

WATCH THE JUMPERS, as the MASTER JUMPER SETTING required for the external box may not be ok for the TOWER....

To be honest, DVD+R DL media should also be good enough, even more suitable when bitset to DVD-ROM.

DVD-R DL is really only functional as data backup media, it doesn't work correctly for video.

Also, +R DL will work for video and data.

    I think thats not correct.

DVD-R DL works for Video (DVD-Video) aswell as DVD+R DL, but many players and readers have problems with DVD-R DL media because they have a hardcoded booktype "DVD-R".

There are exceptions, for one see the SEG DVD 2000 entries.

but he just wants to burn ONE and his firmare isn't up to the job

So let him flash his firmware so he can burn the FIRST ONE
and then decide between + and - dual layers

I've personally never seen a minus dual layer

I've used Verbatim DVD-R DL rated 4x, can be burnt up to 8x with the 110 and 111 and 112.
