  1. I am converting Mpegs which I downloaded from internet to VCD format. I use Panasonic Encoder to convert the mpegs to VCD compliant, I have tpw question.

    1) Is there any way I can VCD compliant mpegs to SVCD before burning

    2) Does converting to SVCD will give me better quality

    Thanks.

  2. If your converting from a vcd to a svcd, I believe the answer you are looking for is no. It won't give you any more quality. If the files you downloaded from the internet were of higher quality than a vcd, than converting those files to a svcd would give you better quality. I don't use the Panasonic encoder, but if you open them up in tpmg it should be a problem to convert them to whatever.

  3. As what Tommy said.

There is absolutely no reason to encode to SVCD standard MPEG-2 from VCD standard MPEG-1. Indeed, you will LOSE quality.

The Panasonic MPEG Encoder doesn't encode to MPEG-2. If you want to create SVCD MPEG-2 files, then you will need another encoder that can do the job (e.g., TMPGEnc, CCE, LSX, etc.)

  4. The mpegs I was converting was not in VCD format. I used Panasonic encoder first to make mpegs VCD compliant and then try to convert them to VCD.

Why converting from VCD to SVCD would not increase the quality. I have S-VHS VCR and when I record some thing from VHS to SVHS it increase the quality

Since when I convert from mpeg to VCD mpeg it definetly make great quality. Since the original mpeg was not in VCD format

    Thanks in advance

Basically because Garbage In Garbage Out. You can't get something from nothing.

When a video clip is already encoded as MPEG-1, it has a lot of MPEG compression artifacts put in. When you encode it further to MPEG-2 (SVCD), the encoder will think that all those artifacts are part of the original picture and tries to preserve them to the best of its ability. In the mean time, it adds some additional MPEG compression artifacts of its own.

End result = LOSS OF QUALITY.

I don't know about your VHS --> SVHS. You may have actually LOST detail, but it may look better to you because it ended up being smoother. This is just a speculation though.

  6. I have mpegs already in VCD format which I downloaded from internet, so the question is if this mpegs converted to SVCD compliant mpegs should this give better quality.

I burned some mpegs today on VCD which were in VCD format and they quality was just fine, little blury and I wonder is there any way I can make little bit more better.

When I checked mpegs property they are in 352 x 240 format and after burning to VCD the quality was not that good, even they look fine when I play on computer screen...

Any body help me with fine tune I am there but if print quality get little better I would be happy

    Thanks in advance
