  1. Okay I am using TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 the latest version.

So I tried to open a AVI file to convert o MPEG2 and says that can not open or unsupported, I know it supports AVI because I've done it before.

Anyone know what might be wrong this time around?

Thanks, and if this is in the wrong area please move it I am new here.

What format AVI? That's just a container name that covers probably a hundred formats. What you need to find out is the codec the format is using. Drop the video into Gspot and it should tell you the codec and if you have it in your system.

    And welcome to our forums.

  3. oh thanks now it works just fine after i found the right codec.

    Thanks much I appreciate it

Oh another thing I was wondering is, I want to convert some of my anime to MPEG2 with TMPGEnc. They are about 170MB(450-500MB after audio decompression) and 640x480 in size. What would be the best settings for TMPGEnc for this?

Not looking for anything fancy just to convert them to MPEG2 in best quality it can get and eventually put it on DVD.

    Thanks in advance

If you have a bunch of clips you want to put on a DVD, you should use a bitrate calculator. This one works well: VideoHelp Bitrate calculator. Add up the total running time of all your clips combined and plug that in to find your bitrate to use. That allows you to make the best use of space on a DVD. Make sure to allow for your audio filesize and about 100-200MB for authoring.

I don't use TMPGEnc to encode the audio, just the video. I save out the audio as a WAV with VirtualDub Mod, then run it through ffmpeggui to convert to 2 channel AC3 audio. Then I add it back with the video when I author to DVD format.

Since you are doing Anime, I'm not sure what you are using to author, but TMPGEnc DVD Author, at least the version I use, doesn't do subtitles if you need those.

Also with Anime, there may be some special settings that will improve the look of the final video. I'm not familiar with those type of filter settings, bit someone else here likely is. The other main change is you will have to resize or add black bars to get to 720 X 480 for NTSC DVD video. Hopefully they aren't PAL format, or there is even more work involved to convert to NTSC video.
