I have different ideas on why mp3 will eventually die. The small article below has some good points, but with the increasing size of hard drives and flash, plus falling prices, one has to ask "why compress music"? Other than sending over the net, what would be the reason? I have been asking this question for a while. Everyone has gotten use to rotten sounding music. Have you heard the tinny sounding boom boxes that they sell these days? The combo systems are not much better. I think we are all being dumbed down with regards to sound quality. we should be seeking ways to increase sound file band width. What ever happed to Hi Fi? Remember when people had "rack systems" and used EQs? I remember when folks cared about sound quality. Now we have pop, rock, and jazz EQ buttons. DVD is one area where people care about sound, but why stop there? I assume people will still want to compress their music even when their portable music players have 500 gig of storage. But why? give me re-masters. I'm done with mp3!

there is such a thing as lossless or near lossless compression - either of which makes a lot more sense than uncompressed ...
dvd is usually dolby digital - which is compressed more than most mp3's ... so not a good comparison ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
These predictions are never good anyway...... usually off by several years - I mean look how long its taking the next gen dvds to take off

To take full advantage of the new format you not only need a new player but you also need an HD TV. I would guess most people have multiple TVs in their homes but I'd bet that most still have one 'main' TV - and won't upgrade till it's dead. How long does an average tube tv last??? 15 years??? 20 years???
