  1. Is there a majr difference between XVID Mpeg 4 files compard to Quicktime Mpeg 4 files? I am asking because when i burn a Quicktime Mpeg 4 file to disc, my Liteon and Philips dvd plays will not play it back. But when I burn a XVID mpeg 4 file, they playback fine.

What containers are you using? .mov for quicktime? and .avi for xvid?
What kind of quicktime mpeg4 are you using? mpeg4 sp/asp or mpeg4 avc/h264?

And if you have a .mov with mpeg4 you can try change it to an avi with mp4cam2avi.

  3. XviD is MPEG4 ASP. And QuickTime is H.264/AVC.

Both standards are MPEG4, but not compatible with each other, unless otherwise noted by the playback device.

    Quicktime is MPEG4-SP and h.264.

An MPEG4-SP encoded file should play fine on your player (as it's a more constrained subset of what you currently can play), but the h.264 won't.

  5. Yes, what he said. As well, most stand alone players are usually only compatible with MPEG-SP, since DivX and XivD use that standard...

    So this means that
Quicktime mpeg4-sp in an .avi should work.
Quicktime mpeg4-sp in a .mov doesn't work in most divx/xvid players.
    Quicktime mpeg4-avc/h264 doesn't work.

You can identify the video codec in a mov with mediainfo.

...and Quicktime MPEG4-SP in an MP4 container should work in players that support MP4 containers. (How many?)

  9. Thanks for the replies. So , to cap it off I will use DIVX and XVID codes, but I cannot use mpeg 4s with h264.

I can use XVID with h263.

    Here is one more question,

What AVI codecs are the ones that usually don't work with DIVX/AVI/XVID capable dvd players? Some AVI files I have that are regualr avis will not play or look really weird on both players.

    Just a guess/hunch...

    Codecs that should work:
DivX 4, 5, 6, Xvid, 3ivX, Mpeg4 SP & ASP from other sources (avoid too many of the "enhancements") incl. possibly 3GP/iPod/PSP, Mpeg2, Mpeg1.

    Codecs thatshouldn't work:
Uncompressed, Losslessly compressed (HuffYUV, Lagarith), DV, MJPEG, WMV, Cinepak, Indeo, many many others. h.264 also, unless specifically stating that it IS supported.

    Depends:
    DivX 3, MS Mpeg 4

DivX 4 was just SP MPEG-4 and DivX 3 = MS MPEG-4 V3, which whilst not actually MPEG-4, I have never heard of a SAP that couldn't handle it (some of the earlier models I think did have some issues though).

When it comes to avi one problem could be the fourCC. Whilst technically players should be able to handle any MPEG-4 Part 2 video stream (as long as it doesn't use features not supported) they only support a limited set of 4cc's. Still most tools when you remux mp4 to avi will set the fourCC to XVID, DIVX, etc. rather than mp4v.

You can always change the fourcc though. AVIFrate, AVI Fourcc Changer, others.
