  1. I'm using software that came with my burner to put some VHS material on DVD. I've done this sucessfully with short pieces many times, but am having sync issues towards the end of longer (2 hr) material onto double layer DVD+R discs at the highest quality setting.

I always thought that the sync was drifting out gradually, but today I noticed it seemed to be OK up to about half way through, then it went about 1/2 second out, sound before picture.

Is it a common problem for sync to get messed up at the transition to the second layer when burning to double layer discs?

The software is converting to CBR MPEG on the fly, so it's conceivable to me that this is what's happening.

I realise it could be lots of other things; just trying to eliminate this possibility.

    No.

I author for DL quite a bit. Your issue is unrelated to media.

Lordsmurf is correct. Some information on exactly how you are doing the conversion might be useful. You should ALWAYS check your files prior to burning for problems.

I would recommend that you only use Verbatim DVD +R DL discs. Other brands of DL discs won't be as reliable.

What you describe it looks like it is you sofware problem during conversion.
You do not say what you use to convert VHS to DVD, or how you import VHS onto HD.
I use TMPG to make file to DVD5 size. For VHS tape that is more than enough, because original resolution of VHS tapes is not there to begin with.

  5. Thanks, I found the sync problems weren't there if I saved as an avi and then converted, it was the conversion on the fly that was drifting. It's not noticable up to about an hour and that saves a lot of time. I know you guys all hate MyDVD but that's what I've got and it's free, and I can't spend cash on "real" apps just now when this is just for fun.

There are plenty of freeware apps for converting to DVD format. HC encoder is a very good MPEG encoder, or QuEnc. Or for simple, DivxToDVD or SUPER. For authoring, there's DVDAuthorGUI or GUI for dvdauthor. And there is ImgBurn for burning the disc. Lot's of 'fun'.

"Fun" costs money too. It should be easy to afford 1-2 necessary software. TMPGEnc is about $40, and SVCD2DVD is about $40. Everything else can be done for free. Low cost for a hobby, only $80 plus blank discs.
