I have used this tool for all my AVI to DVD conversions for a while now with few problems, and have recently upgraded to version 2.1.14.223.

Today I went about converting and burning a 700mb film as usual, but received error reports. The program tells me the resulting conversion in bigger than my DVD5!

I rarely investigate converted files since I am in the habit of automatically burning them and deleting once this is successfully done, which it usually is. Looking at the VIDEO_TS file, it is 4.30gb - is this the size the files usually are before they are burnt to disc? In fact this particular file is over 4.30gb (4408gb?), which is why ConvertXtoDVD says it cannot burn correctly.

What is going on? I must point out I did run the AVI file through AVIMUX GUI to fix the audio synch first, but I have done this many times and have checked the new AVI file after AVIMUX has fixed it - it is a normal 691mb (from 696mb before AVIMUX touched it, and I'm assuming this slight reduction in file size is normal).

Also, I have viewed some of the large converted VIDEO_TS files and they don't sound right at all - some frequent audio glitches for example that are not present in either the original AVI file or the synched-up AVIMUX GUI one.

My log follows - please help!

(note: I tried to convert the film twice, and burnt two useless discs- did not bother burning at all once I saw similar errors in the second conversion)

EDIT: I have just investigated my full log file of the past few weeks (first time I have felt prompted to look at it), and I see there have been many 'warnings' that have gone unnoticed by me. But, after checking it seems the films that have displayed these warnings have burnt and run fine. So what is, for example: WARNING overflow of DVD5 occupation 100.18%, WARNING 31 Frames duplicated, WARNING 25000 frames dropped ('no pulldown' causes this?)!? These do not sound good, I am very curious to know what these all mean and if I should be - or even can be - doing anything about it to achieve optimum conversion quality. Thanks!

It dropped frames because you told it to convert 29.970 fps NTSC source to 25 fps PAL. It can only do this by throwing away frames. The duplicated frames come from the fact that AVIs rarely manage to maintain a truly constant framerate, especially with fractional framerates. The duplicated frames are to keep it constant. So long as the number is low, it is not of concern.

The size issue is odd. 4408 will fit on a DVD, although it is larger than ConvertXtoDVD's standard size target of 4400. The second log seems to indicate a problem with the media.

I don't know about your playback problems without more information about the source and the method of testing. You can easily check the size issue by starting up Imgburn and loading the video_TS folder. Imgburn will tell you the size it is.

what was the reason for upgrading to the new version ?

did you do a total removal of the previous version of convertX before installing the new one, manually removing the folders and checking the registry, removing links and dll's

have your tried un-installing the upgrade and using the previous version of convertX on the same avi file ?

    Thank you for your replies.

I'll come back to my questions about some of the encoding parameters, which have at least been brought to my attention for the first time in light of this problem.

I have just tried to convert another AVI file to disc. The file encoded, I inserted a disc for burning, but... more errors. Note, before this, I rebooted my computer and made a 'fresh start' in case the software was playing up for some reason. To answer your question TheWizard I only upgraded just for the sake of it to be honest, because I heard about the newer version. I didn't go through any specific clean up techniques for the old version. However, please note that up until today I haven't apparently had any burning issues with either my old or new version of ConvertXtoDVD. Also, I do not believe my pack of DVD-Rs (Sony) are at fault, since I am half way through the spindle. Finally, I have just successfully copied a DVDR from that pack with DVDShrink to eliminate a problem with my DVD writer.

I'm assuming there are no current reports of an issue like this with the latest version of ConvertXtoDVD? Before I completely uninstall everything and try and find an older version to reinstall again, can you suggest another cause? Or if that is the only thing to try, how do I go about completely cleaning all remnants of the program before re-installing - uninstall and remove the program, check the usual places for related files, but how can I be sure it's all gone... are there specific files to look for that could cause problems if still there upon re-installing? And is there a way I can find out what was the version number of my previously installed version? Cheers for your guidance!

My log from the last failed burn:-

if you have been running the upgrade for a while with NO problems, it is likely somrhting else caused the problem or curruption.

did you try a system restore, to a previous date when things were working well,

as for cleanup, ( only do this if uninstall ) use registry edit 'regedit' and search for convertxdvd,

    you will get multiple entries

if the entry data shows a location and file name then make a note of it so you can delete it

after you have removed the files the entries point to

go back thru the registry again and remove the registry KEYS/entries

most likely you will be better off leaving this step to somebody more at ease and experienced

I think the first thing is to try a restore to a date when things were working

have you installed anything since the last time it worked and the present when it started messing up

Can you burn with other software (imgburn, for example) ?
Have you changed media recently ?

    (Great film, BTW)

Right I've done a System Restore back to three days ago, before I had any problems at all with my newer version of ConvertXtoDVD. Note: I hadn't recently made any changes to my computer or its programs, but be aware I did have some problems with DVDShrink, DVDDecrypter and ImgBurn copying a disc just yesterday, and it may not just be coincidence that this is when ConvertXtoDVD had begun playing up. There is obviously something not right about this (homemade using DVD recorder) disc since all three of those DVD copiers came back with errors and unable to continue their burn. Perhaps with the writer being stopped by the software mid-burn, something has been affected as a result? (I will check the offending disc when I attempt to finally copy it with my DVD player & recorder). I have not recently changed media, I always use Sony (or occasionally Maxcell) DVD-R.

After System Restore, I've just burned an encoded film successfully, which had failed last night.

Next I will encode and burn a random film from my hard drive and report the results, before I tackle the audio sync-corrected film again which first showed burning problems in ConvertXtoDVD (Night of the Lepus - perhaps my DVD burner has an aversion to giant, killer rabbits).

(Dark Night of The Scarecrow... yes I remember it vaguely from TV years ago, and looking forward to seeing it again!)

The AVI which first highlighted burning problems in ConvertXtoDVD has now burnt successfully.

Thanks for your suggestions, I didn't find what had caused the problem so I will keep an open mind.

    Last few questions:-

I now leave my AVI conversions in the NTSC or PAL format they originated from. Will this eliminate 'dropped frames' and 'duplicated frames', and do I have any control over applying 'pulldown' in ConvertXtoDVD, or is this an automatic process I do not have to concern myself with?

Should I 'add original files to DVD, if possible?' (can't find a good enough description of what this is).

I'm on a quest to obtain the best possible converstions and burns from my downloads, using this software. Do I appear to have everything set correctly now?

Thanks for your input once again.

Leaving setting on Auto will reduce the incidents of dropped and duplicated frames. It depends on the quality of the source as to what will happen. Many avi files do not maintain constant framerate when working in fractions, so when using NTSC source, don't be surprised if you see a few duplicated and dropped frames, however these would be in the 10's, not 100's. Pulldown is automatically applied when converting 23.976 fps source for 29.970 fps playback.

Add Original Files copies the source files to the DVD as well. If you need to keep the avi files with the DVD then you can use this to do so, however it comes at a cost. The space required will be deducted from the overall space, which means less for your movie, which means lower bitrate and probably lower quality. Personally, I don't do it.

Given there are very few options, you seem to have most of them covered. If you really want to get the best you can from your encodes, the time has come to learn avisynth, how to filter, and how to set up a real encoder.

Thanks for that - from examining my logs, it seems adding the original files indeed comes with a price of the software reducing the amount of disc space afforded to the actual video. No more! :O

I think you are right about progressing to AVISYNTH, which I will once I have the time to learn it. In the meantime, I hope to make the best possible conversions I can with ConvertXtoDVD set in the correct way.

One last one for you, which has just come to light:-

I checked a converted DVD in my standalone player earlier, and to my horror the sound appears (ever so slightly) out of sync. As with all my conversions, I religiously check each AVI file in various places to see if the sound needs syching in AVIMUX GUI before I convert.

I confirmed this film was in sync as AVI, and having checked the resulting DVD on my computer, the sound is also in sync! But on two different standalone players, the sound comes in just a little bit late (I have eyes like a hawk when it comes to sound synching, it's one of my pet hates when it's out).

Any thoughts? I checked the sticky thread above about sound going out upon burning, and duly checked this file in GSpot - result: Codec 0x2000 (Dolby AC3) AC3 CBR - codecs installed. So it isn't a VBR encode. I was going to ask if I need to do something to my codecs, but every time I have checked they all seem present, correct and up to date (could codecs be a problem in a case like this?).

The picture in the film both as AVI and DVD is a bit 'blurry', which must be something to do with the original upload (it's a torrent file). I checked another recent DVD I made from the same uploader and the sound is perfect, though interestingly this one does not have that 'blurred' look. Finally, the film is one of two seperate AVI files on the disc, playing non-sequentially, but then that is also the case with the other disc that plays just fine.

My log, with the out-of-synch disc most recent, perfect one is earlier:-

You are using an average encoder on average source, which also has to be resized up to DVD resolution. Expect it to be less than DVD quality.

If you are having sync issues on only some players, I would look at media compatability first.

I'm aware of the wide variation in quality from uploaders, and I'm more than happy to accept battered or poorly encoded downloads if that is all that's available.

But since I'm prepared to put the work in to fix the things that the uploaders havent - i.e. sound synching - and have my software and hardware set up correctly, I'm expecting positive results from my discs.

Apart from when I used to use the dreaded Nero to convert my AVIs, I haven't had a single problem with any other burns turning out to be unsynched and haven't changed my media. It's unlikely that two different brand standalone players would show the same symptoms, I guess there just may be something odd within this file. I'll keep an eye on future burns!

    Cheers
