A friend of mine gave me an old "Celeron D" non-working PC (fried MB) . I plan on replacing the mATX MB, CPU, and Memory. I am not sure if I will use the Onboard Video or get a Graphics Card. The primary use will be video encoding using DVD-RB/CCE. Will using a dedicated Graphics card vs. onboard make a huge difference in performance for my purposes? I am not a gamer and do not plan on watching videos on the machine.

I would like it to be able to encode (3 pass) discs in about 4-5 hrs so I could batch encode at night and while at work. Any suggestions on what components to use, while keeping costs to a minimum.....say, $250 or less?

combo MoBo + Retail CPU = Combo Price: $168.99

    1GB DDR2 = $107.00 (with 2 slots left over for future upgrade.)
total cost is a little bit more than $250.00 but it would be a lot faster than a single core set up.
And if you want to spend for a dedicated graphic card, your system would encode a little bit more faster.

If you want to save some cash, then go for this DDR2

for $89.99. But personally, I'd preferred Cosair RAM.

Graphics card will have no effect on encoding video.

When you share RAM between system and video, there is slow down in the system overall. It'd happen with my systems.

  5. There are lots of mATX socket 775 motherboards with onboard video for $60. Adding a C2D E6300 or E4300 will still be under $250. The E4300 overclocks very easily.

Ah this is true. An integrated card will share system RAM. I was referring to the fact that it does not matter how exotic the video card is, it will have no effect on a software encoder like CCE.

don't forget, he will need to upgrade the RAM too. Duo cores Intel system will push it way over the $250.00 limit.

Only $60 over what you suggested.

For $250.00 you can get a cheap socket 754 cpu, mobo and 1gb pc3200 ram.

    AMD 64 Sempron 3000+ Palermo Socket 754 1.8gz processor, $39.50
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819104241

    CORSAIR 1gb (2) 512mb PC3200 RAM, $74.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145440

BIOSTAR TFORCE 6100 Socket 754 mobo, $67.99 (OUT OF STOCK AT THE MOMENT)

This mobo has built in video but if you want you could buy a cheap PCI-E video card.

A setup like this is a great economical deal. The AMD 64 Sempron can be overclocked with that BIOSTAR mobo and CORSAIR RAM.

  10. The shared ram will have little effect on encoding times, as long as the main app is not starved of ram. Not semporn too slow, pay a few little extra bucks and get a proper 64 bit, cheap now, because they are!
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.
