hey I realize you cant join avi files that have different data rates/frame rates etc

Ive been trying to encode a small avi clip to join on to an existing one, and its difficult as its hard to take the attributes from the existing file to use for the new one.

I load up the existing clip in AVICodec, and it gives me the data rate, so I use that as the rate for the new clip and it always comes out slightly different, so the clips wont join, Ive been using VirtualDub to encode it

I have tried re-encoding the clip a few times to try to match the bitrate, then it says the framerate is off (29.97003 vs 29.96000) even though the attributes list both files as having 29.970fps...

any suggestions on getting this to work? thanks

  2. Hi-

Having different video bitrates is no problem when it comes to joining. If they don't join, it's for another reason, perhaps different audio bitrates, or some other different settings.

Having different framerates is a real problem, though. If they're even slightly different, they won't join. One solution is to set them both to a completely different framerate, join, and then reset the framerate. For your 29.9xxxx ones, I might suggest setting them to 29.5fps (less than originally, so the audio doesn't get cut off), joining, and then resetting to 29.97fps.

To do this, open each in VDubMod and go Video->Framerate->Change To 29.5 frames per second, making sure the Video is also set to Direct Stream Copy. Save them under new names. Then join, at the same time resetting the framerate to 29.97fps.

  3. Phat J,

According to customer support at Video Edit Magic, you can temporarily join AVI files with different frames rates at the timeline, and then re-enconde everything with one single frame rate to produce a consistent final movie.

    I hope this helps.

P.S.: It would be interesting to see if VEM supports the HuffYuv codec, that way, there won't be any loss in quality all the way through.

Try AVIDemux. It can even join clips with VBR MP3 audio, something else virtualdubmod throws it's hands up at.
