hi, he is my question
I have a avi file that has really really good quality....and i want to put it on vcd or svcd...but i dont need the quality increased...so i am trying to cnvert without getting the typical larger file.....
If i converted to VCD would that cause the quality to Decrease any...? since this avi seems to be SVCD or higher quality already...
all i want to do is convert to VCD/SVCD without the need for quality increase...and without having quality decrease or size increase.....
thanks.

oh dont' worry
MPEG will not increase quality, nor will anything.,
All compression results in quality loss. -
Encode to mpeg2(svcd) with cce. Check out www.robshot.com, and he walks through some advanced features with cce which shows a method where you can pinpoint the bitrate to use without losing quality. Check it out!!

Air360 the answer to your question is no.
DivX uses a higher level of compression that VCD's do. what that means is there is more information in 10 meg's of DivX than there is in 10 meg's of VCD or SVCD.
think about it this way. you have a suitcase you need to pack. you can just drop your clothing in there and squeeze the suitcase shut (that would be like a VCD), or you can neatley fold each article of clothing and place them in the suitcase creating space for a few more articles of clothing (this would be like making a SVCD) or you can lay each article of clothing into the suitcase flat and fit even more than you can by folding (this would be like making a DivX). all three techniques will allow you to pack the suitcase but each method uses a progressivley better way to compress your stuff into the suitcase. now you pack with the most efficient way and lay everything flat and go on vacation. at the end of the vacation you dont have the patience to repack so neatley so you just toss everything into the suitcase but no matter how much you squeeze you just cant get the suitcase closed.
to create a VCD/SVCD with the same amount of data as a DivX file you MUST create a larger file because it can not compress the data into the same amount of space as the DivX.
generally speaking when you get a DVD rip DivX it has a bitrate around 1000 kbps. but packs in more information than a VCD with a bitrate of 1150 kbps. this is possible because the compression used by the different formats.peace out,
