  2. Quicktime for windows can't playback HDV files.

I'm not very experienced with HDV on windows, but, from my understanding, the OS isn't equipt to handle the files on it's own. You'd need the help of codecs that would be installed via third-party software or hardware. (Premiere Pro 2.0, Blackmagic card, etc).

Of course, I could be completely wrong. I'm certain someone can confirm stand-alone ways to playback HDV files on windows......

And, just a side not, be careful when sharing video files between Mac/PC. The raw data in the files themselves should work (such as DV, etc), but there is so many anomalies (headers, gamma shifts) that come from moving the files across the OS' that can cause a huge assortment of unforeseen problems.

  4. If you mean MPEG2-TS streams (i.e., as captured from an HDV camcorder) and they are in .mov files, then - according to Apple - you need the QuickTime Player 6 or 7 and the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which costs $19.95.

    See http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/

Okay - Here is a solution to the problem that will do a quick and totally lossless conversion that enables you to play and edit HDV .mov files. You will need two free applications:
    VLC Media Player
    Super Video Converter
Download and install Super (this is a bit of a process as there are a thousand screens to go through to get to the link) avoid the unnecessary additional installs that come with Super - trust me this is a valuable app that I use all the time.
Install VLC Media Player - this will install ffmpeg and other required codecs.
1 - Open your .mov file in Super
2 - Select “MPG” as the output container
3 - Select “Stream Copy” for both the video and audio
4 - Press the “Encode (Active Files)" button
After a few seconds you should now have a HDV encoded video file wrapped in a MPG container that will play in VLC, Premiere and AfterEffects.
Ha Ha - sucks to you Apple!
