I have a JVC dvd player. I've been given a dvd-r to watch which has a TV programme on it. - the disc is a TDK DVD-R. My player doesn't seem to like it. Sometimes it will play, sometimes it will not recognise there is a disc in. There is no region issue as its all PAL R2. Any ideas why this is so?

Could be media incompatibility. Some players may find a disk which meets all standard to be below their sensitivity threshold.

Try using a PC to copy the disk to another brand of media.

You don't say which model you have or how old it is, but older players are fussier about media than newer players. I have an old Apex player and it didn't care at all which brand of DVD-R it played, but it was very fussy about DVD+R brands. The opposite has been reported for other players. It happens all the time where players just don't work very well with certain brands of media. The firmware update suggestion might help, but most likely it's a problem with TDK brand media. Different brands of media use different dyes, have different reflectivities and different qualty control standards and it could be that your player is just sensitive to however the disc was made.
