I have a Panasonic DMR-HS2, which allows either PCM audio or Dolby Digital on XP recordings. As PCM file sizes are much larger, does anyone know if the recorder compensates by reducing the video bit-rate?

There might be a slight lowering of the video bit rate, but there is room for the highest video bit rate and PCM audio on a 1-hour DVD so my guess is the video won't be any different either way.

I don't know about newer recorders, but on the older ones you could set the preference to audio or video, the manual saying the video quality would be compromised if set to audio.
