I recently rented a DVD from our local library. When i tested in my DVD player the above error came up. Furious, I went back to the guy and told him the problem. He immediately responded with, 'Do you have a Philips?'. He then played the DVD on his DVD player and it was fine. I then rented another which worked.
Why is this happening? I know its not a region problem because i get 'Wrong region' error in that case.

As him to explain it. I've never heard of this kind of problem. I have a couple of PAL discs that are big problems for my DVP-642 player, but I could never figure out why. I live in the USA and have mostly NTSC discs and those aren't problems. I have a few PAL DVDs and except for the 2 I mentioned earlier (both are from Russia by the way and they are not bootlegs but legitimate releases), I have no problems with PAL DVDs. I do know that progressive scan PAL discs are problems for some Philips players like mine. If you find out what the problem is please let us know.

Sorry - I meant to say "Ask him" in the first sentence not "As him".

How new is your 642? Also, was the disc clean and free from scratches? Do you suspect your laser lens may need cleaning?
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?
