    Hi,

What would be the most rational way to convert an mkv file into MPEG2? What tools are required?

    Thank you.

What is the ultimate goal ?

If it is DVD, ConvertXtoDVD will convert (most) mkv files

    Thank you.

Yes, the goal is to create DVD.

I read about ConvertXtoDVD. It belongs to so called "1 click solutions". Will the picture in DVD be of a high quality?

Give you have an over compressed source, it will be about what you would expect. You won't get DVD quality back from it, if that is your hope.

If you want to try the hard way, use MKVExtract to pull the mkv file apart, then use avisynth, filters, and CCE to encode the video. Lot of effort for probably minimal gain.

edit : typo - you would think I would be able to type by now . . . .

    Hi,

I've downloaded three versions of MKVExtract and it looks like all the three are corrupted.

Once the program is opened, I get error message that requests two other files to install. If I try to use the program without the files, it does not work and gives more error messages.

The main Web site for the program cannot be opened, at least at the time I was trying to do so.

Is there any other software that can extract MKV files? Thank you!

Download the mirrored version from the MKVExtractGUI page here at VideoHelp. Note, however, that MKVExtractGUI also requires mkvtoolnix to be installed to the same directory.

    Thank you.

I've downloaded it from the mirror side (actually I already tried it) and downloaded mkvtoolnix mkvtoolnix-2.0.2-1.i586.rpm and placed into the same forlder with MKVExtract.

But once I try to open the program I get the same error messages.

Error message when I ckick MKVExtractGUI.exe:

"mkvexract.exe and/or mkvmerge.exe not found in the same MKVExtractGUI folder. Copy them to this folder and try again"

Where should I copy them from?

If I try to use the prog without the files I get error message:

    error creating Chilg process.

    CreateChildProcess(Exename, Commadline, FChildSTdoutWr)

mkvtoolnix-2.0.2-1.i586.rpm is a Linux package. The Windows builds of mkvtoolnix are at the bottom of the page (at least, on http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/downloads.html .) Since you're using XP, you'll want to get the "Unicode enabled" installer. (That should download as "mkvtoolnix-unicode-2.0.2-1-setup.exe.")

    Thank you.

    I downloaded and installed mkvtoolnix-unicode-2.0.2-1-setup.exe

After that I copied the two files from the toollnix folder and it looks like now it works.

    Thanks again!

I extracted the video track from one MKV and ....oh surprise: it is a h.264. I do not know how to handle those. As far as I know Soopafresh is still working on the procedure.

Yeah, I tried converting an MKV like that with the last disc I created, using that method. It quickly went out of sync (VFR video). I think the mkv2vfr utility that's now included with the Haali Media Splitter is supposed to help, so I'll try using that the next time I attempt to convert that type of MKV.
