Just read a thread about this but it dosnt quite describe my problem. Im sure mine is a media problem, cos original DVDs I play on my Philips PET1002 work fine.

However, I created my own DVDs using Datawrite Titanium (datawrite.co.uk) media. Loading the DVD sometimes took ages and the player makes this awful grinding sound as it appears to be searching for something, struggling and finally after 2 mins or so giving up, saying there is no DVD. Sometimes however, it seems to work, and heh! I have it working. BUt then you hear that grinding sound (like a robot that is really struggling to move), and you just know that the image will freeze in a matter of seconds.

Trial and error found that by pressing the lid of the DVD disc holder, was just enought to allow it to reorientate itself. BUt its not long until it happens again. I checked the thickness of the media with a micrometer, thinking datawrite discs were thinnner, but this is not so.

My question? Is this definitely a media problem and if so, what is the best media to buy?

    Kind Regards,

The quickest and easiest thing to do is get another brand of media (or two) and try again. The most trusted names of media are Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden (TY), but many others work just fine for many people. You are mainly looking for two things: 1) a media that you burner supports and can successfully burn without errors AND 2) a media that your standalone supports and can read without errors.

Many standalones are picky about the brand/type of media that they support. You can look up your standalone in the DVD Players section and see what media other users have had success using.

It sounds to me like you've got a hardware problem. Your deck is exhibiting the same symptoms my son's PlayStation II did.

At least in the PSII, the laser rides on a threaded "track" that's motorized. The motor spins the track and the laser moves back and forth on it via an arm that extends over the top and sits in the threads. If the track spins and that arm is not in contact, or the threads don't mesh up correctly, you get a Godawful buzzing, grinding sound and the disc won't track - either DVD or game disc.

You might not want to do this to your set-top player, but I took the PSII apart, figured out how it worked, lubed up the the "track" and made sure the arm was bent so as to allow sufficient pressure on the track to move the laser.

    Good luck with it. 8)
