I have a wmv-hd movie with 5.1 audio. I use my mediacenter with s/pdif, connected to a home theater reciever. Unfortunately it supports dd/dts but not wmv 5.1 sound.

Now the question arises, is there any way to play true 5.1 over spdif with either a plugin or a player that basically turns it into a DD or DTS compatible stream?

If not, what would be the best option to convert? Basically the picture quality should be untouched and i just want true 5.1 sound.

Both ffdshow and ac3filter can realtime convert it to ac3 dolby digital 5.1.

In ffdshow under the audio configuration set it to convert to ac3 audio:

    That sounds awesome!

Im going to try that right now. so as i understand it, it will convert on the fly? With the mixer enabled i can play the wmv-hd dvd and get dolby digital?

    EDIT
The filter doesn't start upon playback. When looking at the codecs, it seems WM pro isn't supported

After looking around i can't find any program / filter that can properly dismantle a WMV9 pro audio track.

Sony vegas does see it as a 5.1 track before opening, but when it is finished opening / building peaks its only a 2 channel audio track.

    EDIT

After all it seems that it's a WM Professional 10 5.1 track. Vegas still opens it as a 2 channel track. It seems the WMpro decoding process uses some kind of algoritm to get all 6 channels out of those two.

And i want those 6 channels separate :P

    EDIT2

    According to this topic:
    http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=40566
it should be possible with Adobe Audition.
    Checking it out soon.
The next step will probably be WMV-HD to TS or some other HD format.
All this nonsense wouldn't be needed if AC3filter or ffdshow supported WMA10pro filtering

Now i come to think of it 5.1 wma has been around for what? 3 years? 4?
I know ffdshow is open source but it seems stupid it isn't supported.

Ok after some hours testing, encoding etc, the program SUPER is excellent to do all sorts of conversions.

However the real time conversion to ac3 seemed too good to be true until l figured out the following:
All players I have tested don't seem to work properly with AC3filter because they use their own build in filters (VLC) or are just crappy players (WMP11).

Mediaplayer classic however does work in conjunction with AC3Filter!
So thanks for the help baldrick, for suggesting AC3filter, but still ffdshow does not work with WMpro audio!

I see, I tested it some years ago and I guess I didn't test wma PRO then. But good to know that ac3 filter work.
