High mate, can you tell me, are you trying to make something like BOTH pictures? or just one of them? the first picture is an animated gif that can be easily made using photoshop, the second is a nice blend, which again can be done in PS

Tell me what you want to do and I can help

I am looking to make something like both of them. 2 individual items. I have the .gif files and everything. I just want to make something like the first example and then separately i'm wondering how to blend that nice with the second example. I have paint.net and adobe photo shop Cs2 9.0.

OK, when you say gif files, do you mean animated gifs?

For the blending, check these out:

OK, the 'not in our house' would be your base layer (layer 1) it measures 335 X 142 pixels, so when you begin your PS project, make your document that size, you now have to pile up more layers that can be looped and thus animated

Now, for the video/animated portion, you will have to grab the video from whatever source you are using, to do this, go to: file>>import>>frame from video, you then select the video you want to grab frames from, grab as many frames as you can be bothered to use (the more frames, the smoother the finished gif etc)

Once you have done that, you will have a BIG pile of frames ready to be dragged and dropped into your PS project, these will form the layers on top of the base 'not in our house' layer

To do this, click the 'move tool' (black arrow icon in the tool box) and drag/drop each frame into the project (takes a while, especially if you have over twenty frames, but it is worth it)

Once you have dropped the frame into the project, use the 'transform layer' tool to resize and place each frame of video as per your needs: image>>transfrom>>free transform

Once you have down that, and have all layers in the correct order, click save>>save for web, this will pop up the save box that deals with animated gifs, select 'loop' and choose the frame rate you want the gif to have, click 'preview' and then 'ok'

You now have an animated gif

I get the dotted outline but if i move that there is no picture with it and the square still remains...so all i have is the square picture and a dotted lined circle.

Ok, lets start from the begining (this wont be as long as the gif info

Right, I take it you opened photoshop, then created a new document for your blend?

Then, imported the picture you wanted as your blend background?

Then imported the picture you wanted to crop using the lasso tool?

Now, if you did this, use the lasso tool and go around the part of the picture you want to use in the blend, once you have traced the area the lasso should appear as a sort of flashing dotted line/rope border, once you see this, right click the space in the dotted line/lasso and select 'layer via cut', this will then give you a new layer formed from the part of the picture you have cut out

Now, if go to layers (up by swatch etc) and view your layers, you should be able to see all your layers, you should see that your imported picture is now two layers (one layer is the lassoed part you need to keep for the blend, the other layer you can delete)

Text? well, text is simply another layer mate, just use the text tool in the toolbox, choose your fave font and add whatever text effect to the text you wish (the text effect stuff is up by the 'layers/swatch/filters' bit, easy)

If you need fonts you dont have, just google for font websites ie: you can get good movie fonts (blade runner and aliens fonts being two of my faves)

Oh and, whenever playing with layers, ALWAYS make a duplicate of the layer you are working on, this way, if you balls things up you can simply start again ie: before simplifying text (which will have to be done before you can add some effects) duplicate it, then start adding effects to it, the same goes for non text layers, such as the layer you have just lassoed, you really dont want to go trhough that again

    http://simplythebest.net/fonts/movie_fonts.html

^^^try these, they have lots of fonts, including the bladerunner, alien, and terminator fonts, the Nasa font is used in the credits of TONS of sci fi films, check it out, I'm sure you'll recognise it

Use the panel on the left hand of the screen to seen more font categories

If you have seen a font somewhere, and you want to use it, just google for it ie: when I needed the alien font I simply googled 'alien font'

Unzip the folder, then go here for the installing guide (its easy BTW)

    http://www.styopkin.com/articles/install_fonts.html

For the blend work, you will get the best results it you take each layer and desaturate them (make them black and white) then place it over your base background layer (in the tutorial above, see how the images have been made black and white, then at the last minute given a colour wash? the colour wash is simply done by creating another layer on top of all your othewr layers - this will block them all out - and what you then do is selct a filter for this colour layer so that the layers beneath shine through)

Also, the blend itself is acheived by playing about with the filters (darken/screen/overlay etc, there are lots) and seeing which works best, sounds confusing, but the only way to learn is practice

Keep going, its going nicely dude

what do you mean by "color wash"?

Look at step 6 in the second guide above, once you have made the layers black and white, you then need a new layer that will colour the finished blend (in Calebs blend, the finished colour is a yellowy shade)

I do this by creating a new layer, choosing a colour, then filling the whole layer with that colour (use the paint bucket tool)

Once you have used the paint bucket to colour this new layer it will obsucre all the layers beneath it, so what you then do, is choose a filter for the coloured layer (this will give it a nice transparent look) and then you will be able to see all the layers under the colour, only now all the blended layers are nicely coloured (like calebs finished picture above)

Thats very good mate, but what you should do is make the layers black and white, and colour them yourself using the above technique, that way you will achieve a far more unifrom blend

Good stuff for day one though dude, keep at it

Oh and, go to Youtube, and search for 'photoshop blending' there are plenty of video tutorials on there
