I have a video file i downloaded that i need to do two things with. Firstly, I need to take a ten second section out of it, form somewhere near the middle (i've got the exact timecodes written down), and re-encode it as something fairly compressed (quality isn't a big deal, a high quality WMV would do the job) - this part is for embedding the video in a powerpoint presentation for my dad at work.

Then I also need to put the whole video on dvd. The dvd needs to play on a PAL dvd player, pal tv (i'm in aus) - the frame rate on the episode shows up in SUPER as 23.97 or thereabouts, just under 24 anyway.

Anyway, I have been trying to convert it to an mpeg 2 to then edit in premiere pro 1.5, and have got the video side of things working nicely and looking high quality, but the import fails due to unrecognisable audio type or something like that when i try to import the MPEG into premiere. I have tried with the three different audio thingies it lets you use when encoding to mpgII in super - mp2, mp3 and ac3, and i have the same problem every time.

Secondly, what is the most hassle free way of putting the whole episode on dvd and getting round the 24 changed to 25 frames problem, and making sure the audio stays in synch?

    cheers

sorry, i'm not a complete *idiot* (the type who don't read any of the posts before posting on a forum) but i read several relevant threads and tried a few different programs and have come up at different problems with the different programs.

virtualdubmod, for example - is giving me a scrambled picture. Super was giving me unrecognisable audio (in terms of editing, not listening.)

This is why i've been asking for help with this stuff.

    thanks

okay, this may not be the most logical way for some people, but it makes sense in my head and i've tried a few other ways that haven't worked - i'm using super to make an mpeg of it WITHOUT audio, as the audio is the problem when editing. I am using audition 2.0 to extract the audio from the source file. I'll put them back together in premiere, and will hopefully be able to edit it from there.

The DVD side of things won't be aproblem, as there is a guide specifically for this (the "convert ntsc XVID to pal DVD" guide.)

thanks for putting up with me though., If that doesn't work, i'm sure i'll be back in the not too distant future!

Encode video at the same framerate but change the resolution to PAL. Then run the mpv file through dgpulldown setting custom:

    23.976 --> 25

This way video has same running time as original audio, but pulldown flags make playback run at 25fps.

thanks for the help pinstripe. It looks like i should be okay for the DVD side of things, it's the editing that is giving me headaches.

even when i use virtual dub mod to make a video file without audio from the source file, planning to stick the audio in later, it won't let me import to premiere. When i use super, it lets me import the audio-less video, but it doesn't show up as anything except black, even after rendering.

I am fresh out of ideas.

So, for anyone just reading this bit.... How can i take a dvix compressed avi and put it in premiere pro for editing. a straight import won't do the trick...

Why don't you run your AVI through this for some clues.

I also seem to have good luck with VdubMp3 freeze.

Seeing as it's a ten second clip try saving it as an uncompressed AVI. You could also try saving the audio as <No compression (PCM)> and see what happens. The results will be a bit larger but maybe it can be worked out in Premier if it accepts it.

  8. As MysTicE suggested, post the detail of your AVI files using either GSpot or MediaInfo.

One more thing, Premiere does not support AVI files except those encoded in dvsd codec and known as DV Type 2 AVI file [that is captured from some DV device]. So if you want to edit it, you need to convert it to MPEG2 or MPEG1. There is no way to import DivX or XviD directly into Premiere Pro.
