What are your favorite Audio editors? I've heard Adobe Audition mentioned - if we don't wish to pay the $350 for that, what would be some lower end choices?

Do we need a separate audio editor or are there some video editors that do adequate audio editing - what are your favorites?

    Thanks.

    Favorite audio editor: Audacity
    Favorite video editor: VirtualDub Mod

Both freeware. But you didn't mention which formats you want to edit?

For MPEG, I mostly use MPEG Video Wizard.

I favor the individual tools, and never had much luck with programs that combine a video and audio editor in one.

  3. Goldwave is a popular and cheap audio editor. The interface is a little odd and filled with tons of small buttons. It is not the easiest to use.
Sony Soundforge Audio Studio is pretty cheap and easy to use.

If you want both video and audio in one package, consider Sony Vegas 7, which is a great full featured editor.

    Sells for $420 discounted.

A really good audio editor with a 30 day eval period is Acoustica V4

$40 and supports DirectX and VST plugins (features I consider a must)

I use all of these depending on the need

    Audio
    - Sound Forge (consumer version Sony Sound Forge Movie Studio)
    - Acid (for loops)
    - Digidesign ProTools (for multi-track music videos)
    - Audacity

    Video
    - Vegas (consumer version Sony Vegas Movie Studio)
    - Premiere Pro (consumer version Premiere Elements)
    - ULead Video Studio (for TV capture editing)
    - VirtualdubMod (for clip processing)

Of the video editors, Vegas has the most audio features. Vegas was built over Sound Forge and contains many Sound Forge (and some Acid loop) features. Even so, I find I often move audio from Vegas to Sound Forge for more comprehensive feature options.

Ok, my error. I ment Acoustica over Audacity. So I need to do a multistep process, mp2 to wave, tweak, write backout to wave, convert to AC3 using ffmeggui. Now hopefully ffmeggui will not taint the output.
    Does this look correct?

  7. For quick edits, trims, fades, and for cuepoints, I like to use Goldwave.

For multitrack editing/mixing, splicing, and sample rate conversion, I like to use Cool Edit Pro (pre-Adobe version of Audition).

I believe Audacity can maybe replace my need for Cool Edit, but I still get hung up on the interface a bit. Really, it's just a matter of I never took the time to just dive in. It's probably not that difficult to learn, but I just cannot motivate myself to make the jump.

    My audio tools:

    1. Sound Forge, Cool Edit Pro2 (form Adobe Audition :: you can try it in trial mode - 21 days almost no limitations (exp 60 sec mp3) ) - (advanced audio editing).

    2. Acid Pro (editing, loop based music creation).

    ---
    3. Steinberg Nuendo (prof creation, recording, editing and mixing tool) and also Fruity Loops (music creation).
