I recently purchased the LG LHR-790 recorder. I recorded Troy of movie max to the HDD. I then recorded it to a DVD-r disk. I can wathc the movie on the LG but if I take disc to another DVD player it says invalid disk. I have tried it on multiple players all with same outcome. I can play DVD-r disks on these players. If I take the DVD-r to my computer it shows no data at all.

Wondering if this is some form of protection or do I need some sort of filter on the input to be able to copy movies to DVD-r's for other players. If so what and where can I find these filters. I have done some reading but so confused. This unit also does not allow me to finalize the DVD-R disc after recording to it so that may be factor as well. I am really thinking of taking this back and going for the SOny model.

Thanks in advance for anyony who replies.

  2. Did you format the -R disc as DVD-VR or DVD-Video? DVD-VR isn't very compatible. Personally, I would avoid it at all costs. Be sure to finalize the disc also, regardless of which format you decide to use.

DVD-R or DVD-RW? Recorder manual says:

    Disc Settings
    Disc Format
If you load a completely blank disc, the recorder will
    initialize the disc.
DVD-R: The recorder initialize the disc to Video
mode. The recording mode will always be Video
    mode.
    DVD-RW/DVD+RW/DVD+R(DL)/DVD-RAM: The
Initialize menu will appears. Select [OK] then press
ENTER. DVD-RW disc is initialized to Video mode.
Also, you can reformat the DVD-RW/DVD+RW/
DVD-RAM from the Setup menu as below.
    1. Select [Disc Format] option then press B.
    2. Press ENTER while [Start] is selected.
    Format Disc menu appears.
    3. Use b / B to select a desired mode (VR Mode or
    Video Mode) then press ENTER.
    Confirm message will appear.
For DVD+RWs, go to step 4.
    4. Use b / B to select [OK] then press ENTER.
It takes a few moments to initialize the disc.
    Caution
If you want to change the disc format, everything
recorded on the disc will be erased.
    23
    Hookup and
    Settings
    Disc Settings (Continued)
    Finalize
Finalizing ‘fixes’ the recordings in place so that the
disc can be played on a regular DVD player or
computer equipped with a suitable DVD-ROM drive.
Finalizing a Video mode disc creates a menu screen
for navigating the disc. This is accessed by pressing
    MENU/LIST or TITLE.
    Caution
Once you have finalized a DVD-R and DVD+R disc,
you cannot edit or record anything else on that disc
except DVD+RW. However, you can record and edit a
DVD-RW disc by choosing [Unfinalize] option.
    1. Select [Finalize] option then press B.
    2. Press ENTER while [Finalize] is selected.
    Finalize menu appears.
    3. Select [OK] then press ENTER.
The recorder starts finalizing the disc.
    Note:
How long finalization takes depends on the type of
disc, how much is recorded on the disc, and the
number of titles on the disc.
DVD+R DL disc can take up to 30 minutes to
    finalize.
    Tips
If you load a DVD-RW that has already been
finalized, you can ‘Unfinalize’ it by choosing
Unfinalize from the Finalize menu. After doing this,
you can edit and re-record onto the disc.
You cannot unfinalize a DVD-R and DVD+R disc.
If [Disc Protect] option is set to [ON], the finalize is
    not available.
Could it be media issue...? Have you tried different one?

Thanks to all that heloed. Turns out I needed to swithc movie setting from HDD to Disk then go to finalize and it was availadle to be used. If movie was not changed to DISK finalize was not available eventhough you were in disk details.

Anybody have any idea of which type of filter I would need on cable from Bell receiver to recorder to be able to copy movies. I ran into a movie today that caused recorder to go "Copyright protection detected, recording stopped." It was Alexander recorded on my Bell PVR that I wanted to record onto LG and then make a disk. I heard I needed to have a filter or something in order to be able to record these and get around the protection.

Apparently these LG LHR PVR recorders with the Dub/Copy from HDD to DvD being real time recording really Sucks. I purchased an LG LHR890 for its 8x DvD burning capability and was really disappointed at this stupid feature. Like if anyone is going to discover or fix the Firmware it will not come from the manufacturer but from keen smart people out in this magnificent world. So here is a thought at one of my Security Chaps I talked with in my dept at work. He too had the same unit and mentioned - 8x dub - if you have an older VCR or DvD player with Video In and Out along with "Line Mode" - Connect your LG PVR to this unit set the VCR/DvD player to Line mode so that the video loop from the LG PVR outputs and now has the Loopback from your external Device - This apparently "Tricks" the Protection chip installed on the main board to a bypass for now real 8x recording. I'm also about to invoke upon changing my 250g HDD on my LG LHR890 to a 320g or poss 500g Hard Drive. In taking out the 250g with all my recorded TV material - If anyone takes notice - Most all HouseHold Devices - Fridges now included/Toasters and you name it - Are Running a Form of Imbedded Linux. So the default File format is most likely EXT3 or EXT4 file systems. One post reads- It won't work or be read under normal Windows NTFS file system but works under Linux. This is most likely your issues - One other thought in addition to this would be Download Install Oracles Virtual Box - Install as a Guest any flavor of Linux - Ubuntu or YellowDog or or a smaller Tiny Linux might provide you the function to reading Our PVR Data under linux running inside Windows - Making easier Transfer of our saved programs. Some thing to absorb in my pleasure to share info to " Ye-All " -- God Bless You and enjoy this info if it may provide ye-all with solutions to many problems. - Atomic_Kidd !
PS: The above connection from PVR to another VCR/DvD with Line Mode - this might only work direct and only for the feature of writing 8x from HDD to PVR Burner - which may also suck in this function by having to remove your connections to your stereo equipment. Yes it will be a bust your butt terrible caveat to the problem of fast dub. But unfortunately eating thy cake might not always be easy!! -- Sorry to also say I have not yet tried the actual dub function from old Vcr/dvd to my Pvr but this one chap at work said it worked.. So I'm sharing this from memory of the problem of fast Dub.. Cheers.
