I have spent many fruitful hours looking for info regarding codecs in general and mjpg in particular. However I have been unsuccessful in finding an answer to my particular problem.
I recently received a number of AVI files with grandaughter activities being the topic. I can't play them because I don't have the MJPG codec. I have confirmed this is the problem by using a free trial version, but it puts an advertising text on the bottom and top of the picture (fair enough for a trial I guess).

However XP SP2 is supposed to have one. Again this is confirmed by running AVIs on another XP SP2 machine. Mine appears to be missing.

Taking excellent advice from you guys I find that this can be reinstalled by installing DirectX 9. This I have done but to no avail. I am probably doing something terrible wrong and if anyone has any suggestions I would be most grateful

    Regards
    Pete

Ffdshow should be able to decode it.

    Dear Supa,
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my problem.
Unfortunately ffdshow does not solve it.
ffdshow certainly can play the videos as can VLC, But they don't actually instal or have the MJPG codec, they just have a smart piece of emulation runtime software. The chart that you drew my attention to is (according to Wikipedia) a list of the codecs that their emulator will cope with.
    Thanks again for your interest
    Regards

    Dear Soopafresh,
Just think I should let you know I have been pointed to a more uptodate version of ffdshow which in fact installs the missing codec, so many thanks for your input with much perseverence in following your recomendation I have finally solved the problem.
It also shows that Wikipedia is not infallible.
    Best regards
