What codec is on every PC machine? I was thinking of Quicktime

No, Quicktime is most certainly not on every PC machine...
Some default codecs that spring to mind are Cinepak, Indeo Video 5.1, Microsoft Video 1, all pretty useless for doing any quality encoding...
There is of course MPEG1, thats about the best "default" codec you're going to get... -
