ok, i've been searching forums for a good 8 hours now and i finally broke down and started to post. yes i've tried the search button and google. ok here's my problem.

i want to play larger video files.. 500mb+ - 1gb... the files, they play but, every 10-20 seconds i get a delay in the playback(just for a split sec or 2). the video and audio stay in synch. i've been able to play these larger movie files on this system befor. i've recently reformatted, and i did install my video drivers and updated them the same way as i did befor. smaller video files play allmost flawless. i've tried a lot of diff troubleshooting... closing EVERYTHING. i disabled all unnessasary system services. i've turned down hardware accelleration.. i've tried changing to lower colours. i have a radeon 7500 video card, which i uninstalled and reinstalled drivers.. and tried on older drivers also.. i really dont know what to do.. these movies, they used to play just fine. so if anyone has any other idea's please share!

If your stats are correct, you have a pretty slow CPU with average memory. I would start by looking at what else is running in the background that might be hogging CPU or memory. You might also defrag your HDD if necessary, and try a different player. I would suggest VLC to begin with, as it rules out other codec issues at the same time.

You need to run a good spyware checker and anti-virus scanner. Your system is vulnerable to all kind of malicious software.
Update your XP to SP2 and get the latest Windows patches.
Defrag the HD on a regular basis.

Make sure the hdd ide controller has dma turned on. It's a likely culprit and the most frequent cause of playback problems.
If that's not it then next I would see which codec is being used to play your files ie if they are xvid/divx are you using the divx or xvid decoder or maybe ffdshow and try another.
You could also switch player some use internal codecs while others are more cpu/system intensive because they load and use on the fly video processing options to enhance the picture and or audio. Check the players under tools on this site for an alternative.

Hardware acceleration would help not hurt you as it takes load off the cpu but either way you should be ok.

btw) I didn't know about this thread I was going to answer elsewhere so what I posted may have already been said by others.
