    Okay - lets take the DVD Player, the burning software, and the DVD media out of the equation. All things being equal, when I go to burn this VIDEO_TS folder to a DVD (properly) and make a playable DVD in my standalone player everything burns great - no errors. When I stick this DVD (not Divx, or any other VCD blah blah format) into the standalone it doesn't play, in the PC it plays. ANY other standalone will not play this DVD either. This same media works on all these same standalones with a "good" VIDEO_TS folder. Am I making sense? This appears to be some kind of menu problem or something because when I double click on the .vob files in the PC they pull up the menus and everything is swell.

    There are several ways to approach this... 1) how do I find out if a VIDEO_TS folder is going to work on a standalone (menu problems etc) before I try and burn it? 2) What is the best way to fix any problems that exist with menus etc before I create another coaster? 3) Is this something that actually made sense and can someone fill in my many blanks?

    Thank you in advance!!!

    1) You could try making a test disc on a DVDRW first. That will take you all of 15 mins.

    2) Open the Video_TS in PGCedit "Trace Mode" then read all the guides.

    3) When you've finished, make another DVDRW test disc and see if that works. If not, repeat step 2.

    Okay, say I don't have any +/- RW DVD's handy (cause I don't) can the PGCedit be used exclusively to troubleshoot this or can I do something else?

    Okay, here is was PGCedit says - and this is where it is breaking on the standalone DVD. PGC doesn't really "say" that there is a problem anywhere, it thinks everything is cool as far as I can tell, but this is at least what it's telling me:
    DVD inserted: "E:\Recording\Video\genericvid\VIDEO_TS\"
    DVD inserted: ""; Provider:
    DVD inserted: Resetting all GPRMs to 0.
    DVD inserted: Initializing the SPRMs to default/setup values.
    ------> Entering VMG , First-Play PGC
    -- pre 1 : (JumpSS) Jump to VTSM 2, Root menu (TTN 1)
    -> sprm(5:Title number in VTS) = 1 (0x0001)
    ------> Entering VTSM 2 , LU 1 (en) , 1 (0:07) 7b. RootM
    -- pre 1 : Set gprm(6) =(mov) 99
    -> gprm(6) = 99 (0x0063)
    -- pre 2 : Set gprm(14) =(mov) 99
    -> gprm(14) = 99 (0x0063)
    ******* Start playback VTSM 2 , LU 1 (en) , 1 (0:07) 7b. RootM...
    ******* Playing Program 1, Cell 1 (0:00.12 + infinite pause) (7 buttons)
    -> sprm(8:Highlighted button number) = 1024 (0x0400) = button 1
    Selected menu button: 1
    -- button : Set gprm(3) =(mov) 1 ; LinkPGN Program 2
    -> gprm(3) = 1 (0x0001)

    If I step through this, it works just fine and the video plays etc. I can't seem to find out what is missing so this will work in a standalone.

    Did you create this dvd or obtain elsewhere? Can your player handle both NTSC and PAL formats?

    I obtained it from a family member - my DVD player only supports NTSC.

    Well, that I'm not sure of. Is there a way to tell? If so, and it is PAL, is there a way to change it to be NTSC?

    Try running the vobs through gspot or vdubmod - NTSC is 720x480 PAL is 720x576. You can also use a software dvd player like mpc to check on the resolution.

    Changing from PAL to NTSC the proper way requires re-encoding. And I'll point you to a couple guides but let's eliminate if it's a PAL/NTSC format problem first.

    GSPOT doesn't support .VOB or other DVD format. At least the selection types don't and when I select a .vob file it says n.a. for everything.

    Try vdubmod. If it's a compliant dvd, gspot should give you some analysis.

    vdubmod...loaded a .vob and went to File-->File Information and it says that the frame size is 720x576. Bummer, it's PAL then.

    I'll point you to this PAL-to-NTSC guide by Fulcilives:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=300144

    It is strictly the movie video getting re-encoded. You will lose any menus though.

    There are other so-called patch methods that are easier but doesn't always work on standalones. Then there are more complex methods while keeping menus.

    But the easiest way is to get a dvd player that can play both.
