I have a few Divx avi files that are at 23.98 fps. Basically I want to get them to DVD. Heres what I tried:

    1. Regular toast DVD encoding: abysmal quality
    2. Regular iDVD encoding: horrible quality
    3. ffmpegx encoding: (encoded with both mencoder and ffmpeg in FILM setting) GREAT quality but stutters on apples dvd player
    4. sorenson squeeze to mpeg2 (29.97) to toast dvd authoring: looks great on apples dvd player, slight stutter on two tv dvd players.

So I think my best bet is going with ffmpegx, but I just dont know which settings to use. The files are 640x348, what "autosize" should i use. what framerate should i set ffmpegx on? what video bitrate should i use? should i enable the 3:2 pull! help me out im just a n00b!!!

What type of stuttering ? If you mean jerkiness in pans and zooms, I would suspect encoding at the wrong framerate.

If you source is 23.976 fps, encode at 23.976 fps and add 2:3 (or 3:2) pulldown. This should smooth out the problems.

Coming from a windows world I only know of Windows based resize calculators - such as FitCD or my own. However a quick google came up with this : http://www.xeep.net/tools-for-video-aspect-ratio-calculator/

Bitrate is wholly dependent on length, and you can use the online bitrate calculator here : https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=VideoHelp_Bitrate_calculator to work it out.

Exactly. With the pulldown, the stutter is gone when played in Apple DVD Player.

Thanks guys got it to work but ran into another problem. FFmpegx seems to be stuck at 100% for a LONG time and occasionally the progress program will just quit by itself.

    ???????
